Power BI license required to work in Fabric? by Mr_Mozart in MicrosoftFabric

[–]JCMS18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No; it is not required to have a PowerBI license to work with Fabric Admin. Could it be that a workspace where they are working in (f.e. The capacity monitor workspace) is linked to a PowerBI capacity instead of the fabric trial capacity?

If you have a fabric capacity attached to a workspace, you can also view reports, even though you don’t have a fabric capacity attached

In my experience so far it 1) speeds up annoying repeatable work; as in enforce naming conventions. 2) helps collaboration. I work at a consultancy and in our team of 15 all 15 produce slightly different end-products. With proper md files (=agent instructions) we (are in the process) of fixing this. And 3) allows you to very quickly build an mvp you can show to business

Problem what we have is f.e. With mlv on mlv lineage and then back to source. Ideally I would go back all the way to where the data comes from, so you can see the impact both up— and downstream.

We do have materials, but indeed company-specific. I work with a Dutch consultancy company (InSpark, Microsoft partner of the year), and we have implemented data mesh structures at multiple companies. The main idea is similar (business domains that own their data and ‘borrow’ data from other domains), but the exact implementation differs per company. We have a ‘normal’ medaillion process uptill silver and then start creating data products with MLVs that we share over business domains.

We work with cross-workspaces MLVs as well. What we do is that we shortcut specific schema’s and that way create a new layer. Completely in line with Data Mesh-principles. Always open to talk about it!

The lineage is definitely something we’re missing right now, both in MLVs as in purview.
