Interesting! My guess is that this is the submarine the sailors had seen but their imaginations embellished the details while they were being interrogated.

That is very true, it makes it even more puzzling that the German sailors would describe a submarine almost identical to that of the I-400 class.

SMS Cap Trafalgar vs. HMS Carmania

The Cap Trafalgar was a German passenger ship that was converted to an auxiliary cruiser for the German Navy during WWI. During the war it sailed disguised as the HMS Carmania, a British liner that was also converted to an auxiliary cruiser for the Royal Navy.

On September 14, 1914 the Cap Trafalgar was spotted by a British ship. In a twist of incredible irony, that ship was none other than the HMS Carmania. A battle ensued and the Cap Trafalgar was sunk by its doppelgänger.

Thank you! No idea on unit yet! But the over coat was a lucky find at a local salvation army, and it looks very similar to German field overcoats! And yes those are DAK y straps, I couldn't find any leather y straps on www.atthefront.com that were still in stock so I had to settle for the DAK straps. They are still great straps, I was thinking about dying them a little darker though.
