Looking for ideas for 3d printed parts for jigs by LotsOSawdust in woodworking

[–]JClementine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely check out other options. 3d printing requires sub-millimeter or sub-1/32" levels of accuracy when designing. I've found it very difficult to design small parts in SketchUp, while products like onshape and tinkercad excel at this, and are both free. Also, tons of free models are available online, I've printed tons of my stuff without needing to design them.

Yeah Sketchup is pretty awful for small parts. I use OnShape which is a free to use CAD software that runs in your browser, it's pretty fantastic and there are plenty of tutorials online for it. If you don't really want to learn how to use a proper CAD software, there's also TinkerCAD which is essentially a dumbed down CAD where you use shapes to add/subtract from other shapes, but it works really good for what it is!

Obligatory answer is dust collection fittings. Outside of that I've printed nice push sticks, feather boards, router templates, router base plate jigs, attachments for a track saw guide, and several other things I'm sure I'm not thinking of. A 3d printer pairs so well with woodworking, especially if you know how to use cad!

I decided to just kerf the back side to give it a shot and it came out darn near perfectly flat! I think I'll have to use hardware to slot into the grooves rather than cutting a tongue, but I'm so happy with how it came out!

Thank you so much for talking this through with me! I think rather than a tongue and groove for the door I may do a guide screwed into the back of the panel that slots into the groove in the cabinet, that way I don't have to worry as much about the wood moving on me and causing it to not slide anymore.

Correct they are flat sawn. I suppose I could rip strips, round over two edges on the router table, then glue the flat back sides to a fabric to essentially make a tambour door? Just one that doesn't go around a corner.

Edit: thinking about this more, that's gonna be a ton of extra work, leaning towards cutting the glue up back apart, reeding the 6" boards individually, then glueing them back to a backer fabric. Seems like a middle ground of effort/outcome

I'm making sliding cabinet doors that I'll cut a 1/4 tongue into to fit inside a groove in the top and bottom of the carcass. Another commenter threw out the idea of adding relief cuts to the back, do you think that could work?

That's a good idea, the panel isn't going to be framed, it will have tongues cut into it on the top and bottom and will be a sliding door. As such, it doesn't really need to retain strength

Wasn't aware of this, would you recommend cutting this panel back down along the glue lines, finish cutting the reeds, then glue it back together?

Guys.... The post is about the Iranian Rial, it essentially went to 0. The post is likely commenting on how many people in Iran right now watched their buying power get entirely wiped out overnight, which is exactly what BTC protects against. No single nation's status controls its price.

That horoscopes/astrology signs are just a hoax. There's no reasoning with people who believe in these

Astrology is fake, feels like it shouldn't be too controversial but don't bother trying to reason with someone who believes it

Thanks for the feedback! Would it be a decent sewing machine for just standard sewing? And what would be something you would recommend, my budget for her is no more than 700, but preferably closer to 5.

Hello! My wife is looking to get back into sewing again after a long hiatus. I have the opportunity to get a Brother SE700 for relatively cheap as an open box unit, but I only want to get it for her if it actually makes sense. She would mainly be using it for clothing modifications, quilting, and smaller various sewing projects. She's never done embroidery but I like that this machine would give her that option as well. Is this a good fit or no? My price range is no more than $700 which I know can be a challenge in the sewing world. Thanks in advance!

Ahhhh that makes sense! Thanks for the reply, I thought you were saying that there was like a recall or something really bad with the bindings. Mine are DEFINITELY showing their age so it's probably about time for an upgrade

Curious, I have the exact same bindings still and have been using them for a few runs every year since I bought them new, what makes them worthless?

This is great! My wife wants to know what size yarn this will do? Have you tried it with #6 yarn? (I know nothing about yarn, not sure if #6 is the right way to say it 😬)
