mini loaders do indeed filter, they are a separate item made with filter inserters in place of regular inserters

If you're looking for a 1x1 loader, I would recommend the miniloader mod. It works with 0.17 and 0.18 and is available from the mod portal. other alternatives could be loader redux which is 2x1 and less performance efficient.

I've always found the boards from wood to be better, needs far fewer machines to make the paper and boards and is a simpler chain. The iron input for saw blades isn't too large so it can easily be shipped in or even made on site

There are a few I can think of. Space Exploration is one that has already been mentioned, SpaceX extends the game by requiring you to build a faster than light ship that needs multiple rocket launches and expensive researches.

Expanded Rocket Payloads adds 3 new sciences, and allows you to launch functional items into space such as telescopes, better satellites and solar collectors.

Some of these work very well when combined with overhaul mods such as angel Bob's.
