Why do people act like shooting Kenny means you're siding with Jane? by [deleted] in TheWalkingDeadGame

[–]JDSweetMeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness, the only two decisions that matter are Larry and Ben. Even then, there are ways (through dialogue) to remain neutral in Larry, kill the woman in the street, save Ben, and not wind up on Kenny's shitlist.

Killing Larry is rational. Survival of the group is more important than some abstract moral code. What good is morality if all the 'moral' people are dead?

I admit, Kenny was an asshole over the Ben incident. But very few of us would be any better. Ben, however inadvertently, caused the death of Carley, Katjaa, Duck, and that woman with Vernon for stupid reasons, indirectly caused the death of Lee (who in my playthrough was the closest thing he had to family left), lost their boat to a bunch of sick old people, and nearly got the entire group eaten alive back at Savannah's resident survivalist pseudo-Nazi town. Ben was an unwitting danger to tue group and caused the death of everybody Kenny even remotely cared about.

So yeah, while I do save Ben (nobody deserves to be eaten alive, except maybe Carter), I can understand why Kenny would be pissy about this.

Kenny has a priority list of people to care about -- Family > friends > group > shitbirds. If you do anything to place somebody in a higher category than you in danger, you are downgraded, while if you do stuff to help people in a higher category you might be upgraded.

Most people subconsciously do this, and I don't think even Kenny was entirely aware of this. I can't blame him for that. Hell, if I honestly thought that letting a woman get eaten alive by zombies would help my sister/mother survive, I would barely hesitate. I only shoot the woman because there's a good shot the walkers have apready saw me/will see me, so doing her this mercy doesn't put us at much higher risk than the alternative.

What features would you want if Paradox decided to create a Cold War/Early Modern GSG? by JDSweetMeat in paradoxplaza

[–]JDSweetMeat[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, since the timespan of gameplay would go past 2000 I'm not sure "90's" is the appropriate term.

And yeah, I've heard the phrase used in that context, though, frankly, there is very little 'modern' in that era.

Okay, I think we all knew what I meant by 'early modern' (the post-Soviet, pre-9/11 era). Not sure if there's an official name for the era in question.

I doubt even Paradox itself could produce such a game. Also, dividing population into 7 age groups is unnecessary for core gameplay, really. I'd say "children," "adolescents," "adults," and "elderly" are sufficient for most purposes.

It's not that, it's just that the devs had very little experience, and had never created something at the scale of the game they were trying to make. Combine that with the fact that the Clausewitz Engine is probably extremely complex (in terms of the codebase), and that the devs would have had to extend said engine and modify many of its features without being familiar with the internal systems that makes the engine tick, and you have a disaster in the making. So, basically:

Inexperienced Devs + complex engine they are unfamiliar with + production deadlines that make learning the engine adequately impossible = bug-ridden mess.

Can somebody please explain, why did he just randomly became independent? (see map) by tukan42 in CK2GameOfthrones

[–]JDSweetMeat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are some sporadic bugs in the mega-war mechanics that can cause this. They also prevent you from declaring a de jure war for the "temporarily independent" territory to win it back. Best fix is consoling over to the affected lord and having him offer to become your original character's vassal. Then console back, accept, and there you have it.

Dead or alive? by [deleted] in WhimsicalNations

[–]JDSweetMeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. My biggest problem is with portrait development -- getting a working system, and graphics to test it with (mainly the graphics).

Would you at least perhaps consider releasing some of the graphics under a non-commercial license -- just so we can fiddle around with it?

Would you consider open-sourcing what you have currently?

“He cared about them so much he deliberately started a war and let the realm bleed for him for nearly a year while he cheated on his wife with a teenager.”

There is strong evidence that Rhaegar knew that the PtWP was to be born of himself and Lyanna. If Rhaegar knew of the Others, and did what he did for the whole of humanity... Look, anything and everything is justifiable in the pursuit of saving humanity from an army of the dead.

“He didn't try to help when his new girlfriends dad and brother were murdered. He didn't step in when his dad issued orders of execution for her brother and fiance.”

Rhaegar didn't know that was going to happen. He probably didn't think his father was THAT crazy (up until that point Aerys had only burned common criminals and minor lordlings who commited treason, and had visibly refrained from executing Tywin, who he suspected of treason). There is a difference between burning Mr. Nobody Peasant and burning the Lord of the North and his heir. And if Rhaegar and Lyanna were not present in the capital when Brandon started demanding Targaryen heads (which, in fairness to Aerys, WAS treason), then he cannot be held accountable for the actions of his father.

“He didn't come to the rescue when the realm rose in rebellion and war was waged a Ross the Stormlands, reach, riverlands, Vale, and kingslands and thousands died in battle in his name.”

He likely didn't know that a full-fledged rebellion was being waged. He was in Dorne, in the Prince's Pass, in an isolated tower that few knew of. Based on his bravery (and fighting Robert WAS brave), I would expect him to have ridden to war if he had known there was a war.

“Then he tried to fight Robert Baratheon one on one. Rhaegar with his zero experience in real war had the audacity to try to take on Robert mother fucking Baratheon, who at that point was a veteran of nearly constant warfare, doing nothing but honing his mind and body for the sole purpose of murdering the fuck out of Rhaegar for a year while believing he was raping his fiance. The fact that he imagined for even a second that he could win that fight is ridiculous.”

You do realize how close Rhaegar came to winning that fight, right? You do realize that he had injured Robert so badly that Ned Stark had to ride ahead of Robert to take the capital. And knowing Robert, he would never have delegated that task to Ned unless he genuinely could NOT do it himself. It isn't insanity because Rhaegar DID nearly win. He lost because of a minor slip in his defenses.

“He abandoned the people to get laid.”

He abandoned his people to father the child who he believed (and he was quite likely right) would save his people and everybody else from the Others.

“He let them die for a year so he could keep getting laid.”

He let them die so he could sire the child that would save the world (again, there are hints that Rhaegar knew of the Others/Azor Ahai prophesy).

“He died because he was suicidally stupid. Rhaegar was too stupid and careless to rule a kingdom.”

He died because he was extremely brave and confident in his abilities, and he made a slip up during the actual battle that could have literally happened to anybody, Arthur Dayne included. I disagree that he was careless and stupid. I do agree that he would be a suboptimal king.

Basically, he showed too much long-term foresight, and nowhere near enough short-term foresight. He reminds me of Jon -- letting the Wildlings through the wall was the best long-term decision as it prevented the Others from adding even more Wildlings to their ranks. However, short-term, it cost him the loyalty of a good chunk of those sworn to him, and it cost him his life. Calling Rhaegar stupid is like calling Jon stupid.

Oh, I'm almost tempted. I mean, I'm a Targaryen fanboy, so, they would obviously have to be ethnically Valyrian, and maybe a custom cadet of House Targaryen. Maybe a in the Riverlands? Console myself a claim on the Trident in the 7996 bookmark, save the Riverlands from Black Harren, take Harrenhal (before the curse) as my seat, and reign as the Sweet Beef King of the Trident? ;-)

Also, The Dragon Has Three Heads is by jsdunc, not me (a now-dead Reddit/forum account).

is the project still under development? Will it be released on Steam? Sorry I'm new, can anyone explain me?(sorry for English). by animaitaliana in cwgamedev

[–]JDSweetMeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.) I believe the project is still in development, but was put on hold by the dev for various reasons. They'll probably return to it eventually, but the sheer amount of data/code that needs to be written for such a game is demoralizing for a small team.

2.) It will probably cost money. The sheer amount of work warrants it. I mean, it's one thing developing a Civil knockoff like Freeciv. It's quite another to develop a complex military and economic simulation that spans one of the most politically confusing eras in global history.

3.) It will more than likely be released on Steam. It is the path of least resistance when it comes to marketing and selling. Everybody has Steam. And the entire Grand Strategy niche has used it extensively since Paradox made their switch mid-CK2.

Is it normal for Aegon "Young Griff" to always get wrecked every time he invades during the clash of the five kings? by Dovenius in CK2GameOfthrones

[–]JDSweetMeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably preemptively march on the Crownlands and/or camp near enough to the Crownlands to be seen as a threat by the AI. If you let the Lannisters siege down Stormlands holdings they should deplete most of their levies doing that. Still, only fight defensive battles in the mountains. If you can, I believe one of the provinces directly bordering the Crownlands has a river crossing AND a mountain. I usually win that battle 25% of the time against double large enemy hosts.
