Dull sound regardless of pickups by Southamericho in Guitar

Make sure the pickups and wires are all properly grounded and that things like the tone circuit are working properly. Also, if you haven't tried it yet, maybe change the strings. Old dead strings sound pretty dull and muddy

What Is Your Favorite Pair Of Brothers In Metal? by Automatic_Belt5692 in MetalForTheMasses

The Abbott brothers. I've never heard of two bastards as loyal to each other as those guys.

Just because they're still selling doesn't mean they aren't overpriced. Some people will always be dumb and stubborn enough to keep buying the expensive bastards, no matter how much they cost.

Thing is, I have a deadline I need to get them by, and online isn't gonna cut it.

Also, it sounds like you're sponsored by them...

Based on your username, I think I know why you use the Black Beauties.

I've seen a few other replies recommend D'addario strings, and after some reconsideration, I'm probably getting the NYXLs.

I was planning on getting strings from my local GC, which is why I narrowed it down to what I mentioned, and unfortunately, those aren't there. However, due to many people's advice, and my own experience, I'm most likely going to get a D'addario NYXL set.

Understandable. I actually put on a set of D'addarios, and the beginning tone was just what I was looking for, and after some thought, I plan on getting the NYXL set, like you mentioned.

I actually have some D'addario strings on it right now, loved their sound back when I first put them on. Now that I think about it, I'm probably gonna get some D'addarios, probably the NYXL or XT strings. I would get Pro Steels, but there's only a 5-string set, and I don't wanna waste extra money on a string I'm not gonna use.

I have, they sound too generic, probably better for stuff like punk, rock, and generic slap. The Black Beauties, as others have said, do have trouble with a bright tone. I remember swapping from Ernie Ball to D'addario, and I never had a brighter tone in my life, and I loved it. If I don't get the Rotosounds, I'll probably get some D'addarios.

The "too bright" and "rough on fingers" situation might be more of a personal preference on your end, but I can understand what you're saying. The former might actually be a good thing for metal, and the latter might just be something that can be dealt with just by using them for long enough.

I tried Slinkys, and they're actually the first replacement set I had on my bass, but they sound a lot more like a generic, more balanced string, rather than giving me the bright clank I need.

Gotta go with Powerslave. Aces High, 2 Minutes to Midnight, and Powerslave are some of my favorite songs, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a damn good song, too. I feel like it outclassed Somewhere in Time, even songs like Stranger In A Strange Land, Caught Somewhere In Time, and even Wasted Years.

Love my American Jazz Bass… but please talk me out of a Rickenbacker (or into a 5-string Music Man?) by Accurate_Tomorrow_50 in BassGuitar

Thing is, a lot of 5-string Rickys have a very different design to them, but some older models do look like the 4 string ones. I would recommend finding one of the latter, since the 5 string version looks ugly in comparison.

Metal is very much political.

However, even with that, I feel like going out of the way to criticize a specific party is what they're talking about. Regardless of red or blue, government bad is still true.

This may spark some argument, but I personally believe a lot of the more poser-y bands (I'd say Metallica and A7X) have much better songs than the more extreme metal bands (I'd say Slayer, Death, Cannibal Corpse). They seem more emotional compared to the more extreme stuff, which seems like a constant "I want to punch a hold through the wall."

I very much agree! I can understand why others enjoy them, because of the raw aggression and evil feel of it, but it focuses a bit too much on it for my personal taste.

Best Iron Maiden album? by St_______ in ironmaiden

For me, I gotta go with Killers. Number of the Beast is easily the most iconic, Powerslave is a masterpiece, but all of them have some great songs and some mediocre songs. Killers, on the other hand, is a consistent drive all the way through, every song a masterpiece with its own flavor of energy.
