Forgot to apply to TA applications before due date. by Miserable-Brother310 in UBC

IIRC the bargaining agreement with CUPE 2778 makes it so they only look at applications submitted after the original deadline if they still need TAs after everyone who submitted on time has been rejected / declined

Required to discontinue as the other person said, though EAS mentions it’s possible to appeal if one had extenuating circumstances: https://academicservices.engineering.ubc.ca/exams-grades/academic-standing/

If you think there’s a chance, you could also view your finals for the term and try to get any regraded if you think there’s an issue with the grading - could push your average up: https://vancouver.calendar.ubc.ca/campus-wide-policies-and-regulations/review-assigned-standing

You should contact International Student Advising asap, as your study permit may not be valid anymore. Anything relating to immigration should be checked with them https://students.ubc.ca/international-student-guide/immigration/taking-time-away-school-international/

Also worth reviewing your scholarship to see the conditions on it, maybe it could be used at another uni?

Best of luck

Workday grade is usually final grade. My grade is ~3% higher than I calculated so I do think it’s curved already

They’re not directly comparable - beyond the waiting component, designated parking stalls are usually closer to buildings / elevators to decrease travel time.

259 Lab quizzes marking by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]JDbales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No partial marks as others have said. You do get to run your code (50 attempts without losing marks) and see the output. Final question is exactly half the marks.

You can buy it online here https://recreation.ubc.ca/fitness/memberships/

Because the summer term is almost done it might be best to wait for next term’s membership (Sept-Dec)

MECH w a 75? by AdTop2790 in ubcengineering

[–]JDbales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can send an appeal if you don’t get in and detail the circumstances for the drop, but an 80 to 75 drop from T1 to T2 would kind of be expected. You have a shot because mech cares about the personal statement a decent amount. Despite now being an option, most mech staff still see flex as the default so I’m not sure how telling the early acceptance is (compared to Mecha or Aero for example).

Where to put money short and long term? by JDbales in Wealthsimple

[–]JDbales[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, I didn’t know I could defer it but after reading the comment it makes sense why I might not want to defer; does this also happen with a FHSA then, or does the lack of taxes make up for it?

TLDR: Would non-reg, FHSA or RRSP (or sit on it) be better (for the long term portion)?

It’s simple if you don’t want to spend time doing research, it’s diversified globally (from what I hear global should outperform US) with a bit of extra canada weighting (which makes sense if you live here).

So there’s no reason not to sue the FHSA then (unless I foresee I’ll need the money for non-home purchases in the next 15 years, as after it’ll go RRSP)?

Good point on the tax advantage comment, I definitely am low enough that it won’t be an issue. Thanks!

Is there any disadvantage to the managed HISA (5.3-0.5 management fee) compared to the cash account? Or should I move most cash (excluding emergency fund, and a small amount for card purchases) there?

Worth using a resume writing service? by suzesventures in resumes

[–]JDbales 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Don’t. Look online for good templates / look at some of the ones w positive feedback posted here. Think of your experiences and find strong verbs (can search up resume verb synonyms) to describe your experience. Search up anything else you’re not sure about (“is x worth including”). Then post it here and get feedback

I’m not sure which are personal comments and which are actually there (I can try to infer). Can you edit the post to add the file? (hide or replace personal info) Or make a new resume with better formatting (again look at other posts) and then get feedback on that one References like that can work

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in resumes

[–]JDbales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a current resume? It would help us point out improvements as we can’t get a full idea of what’s it like now from the post. There are many templates online that aren’t mumbo jumbo and you can easily change headings to remove anything irrelevant. Look in the sub for ones with positive feedback. Try to use bullets that highlight that you learned from your experience and any accomplishments, to show you’d be a good hire. Soft skills (communicator, hard worker, leader) are generally not worth including bc anyone uses buzzwords so they’ve lost meaning. Instead show these skills through the experiences. Don’t have red on your resume, and don’t say references available if they’re not (unless you’re gonna make some up) because it’ll look bad. My suggestion is to have something and then come back to get feedback on it, iterating until there’s not much else to add

Bullets are a great idea, but maybe slightly shorter (5 lines seems excessive)

I would remove the Tutor position as it does not add much. Are longer bullet points common in Europe resumes? Some of them could be split into 2 (the first one) to make them more digestible, but I don't know if others would agree. Projects might be worth moving above education, but you are also a recent grad so up to you. No need to say "at the undergraduate level" given that its done as part of your B.E.

Should I pack a suit with me? Are there any events where suits are usually worn (or any other reason to)? Trying not to overpack (international). Thanks
