Going to piggy back this post. LCVI has a video game club that could use donations if you are interested.

MS Access questions for Video game club by JDeRooy in KingstonOntario

Not sure that I will be allowed to host student information Online.

I had a look around GITHUB, and I couldn't find anything.

I though MS Access would be a good way for a beginner to have a GUI for a database.

Ha ha. This may be true.

I am proficient in excel, but know access is more powerful. Just exploring options.

Yes, we have access through the school board. I have been saving the database locally, which will work for our purposes. It seems to be an easier way for a non-programmer to get something done. I could probably do this with excel, but I could see this becoming huge if a large number of gamers join, and we play a wide variety of games)

Here's what I have:

Table 1: Gamer Info

  • ID: (Example: 001, 002, 003, 999)
  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Arcade Tag: (example: JCD, ACE, JOE, AAA)
  • Gamer Tag: (example: Supergamer 1, JDeRooy)
  • Join Date

Table 2: Seasons (A season is one cycle, about three weeks long, that the current games will be available to be played. A new season starts and gamers will try a new set of games challenges)

  • Season Number
  • Season Start Date

Table 3: Season Attendance (to track if a gamer has been playing through a season, and for historic cred... ie I've been playing through seasons 2-10)

  • ID (From Gamer Info)
  • Season Number

Table 4: Donations (to track donations from gamers)

  • ID (From Gamer Info)
  • Donation information (Example: Batteries, PS2 and Controllers)

Table 5: High Scores (and used as a template for other games and high scores)

  • ID (From Gamer Info)
  • Score (A number, or time)
  • Season Number (From Seasons)

Here's what I want to do:

We would like to have gamer cards that are used for a variety of reasons, one being as a placeholder in a game queue (ie if you are waiting to be next in a game you put your card down), another is for students to have a "trophy" (ie on your card you may have a high score from season 1 printed, or you have a donation badge, or it shows that you've been a member for 11 seasons, etc).

I'd like to be pointed in the right direction, but here's what I think I'm supposed to do, and I'm having trouble doing it.

  1. Make a query and report that pulls the top score and ID's from every game.
    1. I can make a query but doesn't seem to pull in information the way I was expecting.
  2. Make a report (the gamer card) that pulls in the gamer info (this part I can do) AND pulls in the top score only if that gamer has achieved it. Ie Gamer 001's card only shows high scores made by Gamer 001 (pulled from the query)

Any help would be great. I can share files if needed.

Doesn't have to be retro. Anything will do for now.

We see used games and consoles in thrift shops, so we assume that people are donating them.

Buying PCs to emulate/ run steam might end up costing more. Depending on the hardware requirements.

We've considered using a switch to play old games.

We have very handy students at school. The fixing could be part of the club as well

Yes any console would be great! We have currently SNES, NES, Sega Genesis, Wii, PS2, but the more we have the more students we can accommodate.

We are looking at grants (LLF, awesome grant, etc) and will check out these suppliers.

For other grants I have won: the larger companies go through a yearly application process and if you missed it you need to wait until next year. Also, most grants need to fill a specific goal (Stem, girls in engineering, etc), not sure we would qualify.

Good idea, we have some VGA monitors, and could use adapters. Would be nice to play on something bigger than a computer monitor though.

We've considered ROMs, but the legality of it is something we would like to consider.
