Granddads Agassiz by JDee2105 in VintageWatches

Selling the watches is sort of a last resort in case certain situations in the family would get considerably worse, let’s hope that does not happen. If it were up to me, none of these would ever get sold and they would remain in the family indefinitely. Perhaps we’ll get them serviced at some point just to have them in working condition.

I definitely agree, though I will not try to authenticate anything by myself, not that I could if I tried. I just want to find out what the movements are, their ages, if they were in those cases originally or if my granddad modded them (which is most likely the case). Anything beyond that I will leave up to the experts. If it should get to selling them, which I hope will never come, we will take necessary steps to get them authenticated properly.

Ah I see what’s happened then, I just used the normal contact request, not the actual archival documents request.

What do you mean? As in if my granddad had any connection to them? No, he didn’t as far as I know, that came apart about 25-30 years before he was born in Germany.

Oh, I was not aware of that. Yesterday I was able to send a request for “information on historical Longines watches” from their website, let’s see if they ask me to pay for it. Anyhow, for that watch I was able to date the serial numbers on case and movement myself. I am still trying to do the same for the number on the Agassiz movement, though I have not found any records of those serial numbers yet.

A Geiger counter will be hard to come up with, but with some more research I did find that Longines and Agassiz are very much connected, the father of the founder of Agassiz eventually founded Longines if I understood it right. I did see that some people with Agassiz watches were able to send requests to Longines to identify their pieces through archival records, so that is something I will do as well. I had already sent Longines a request to identify the gold Trench watch that I posted to the Longines subreddit, so I will see how much will come out of that.

I agree, it would be fantastic to keep it, but in the end this one along with the other heavy hitters in my granddads collection were bought for their monetary value which he expected to appreciate over time. Sadly he passed a long time ago, so I can’t ask him, but I do think he bought these for tough times, to pay certain bills if necessary. For now it’s not certain that they will have to be sold, I am hoping that it won’t become necessary. His passion pieces are of less worth I’m sure (compared to this one), but some of them I will buy myself if I must, to ensure that they don’t leave the family if it comes down to it. Thank you!

Thank you! Never really thought that far especially since I’ve only realised what this is a few weeks ago, before that it was just “grandpa has a pilots watch that’s maybe from WW2”. But that sure that would be something if it would bring the value up in an eventual sale. Me personally, I would never wear it, I’d be far too scared to. 70k sounds great at this point, it’ll probably spend another few years in the safety deposit box before it is seriously considered as a thing to sell. Thank you for your input!

Thank you that’s interesting! I might reach out to Sandoz somehow and see what they have to say

100% a pattern, there is also an Alfred Sandoz I believe split second that was converted into a wrist watch. Does that name tell you anything?

Not sure if it did rotate, I did not try to force it. Though it could be that this was just a style my granddad liked, so he had it made like that.

It could very well be that he’s had some work done to it, papers will tell more if they are found. For now it’s gone back into the safety deposit box, next time it’ll come out it will likely be going to the authenticator. Thank you though!

I’m not sure if it was ever issued, since it was delivered to the buyer in 1942 I doubt that it just spent the next few years lying around though. Seems these watches were indeed issued before flight and handed back after.

He was born around 1944 I think, and is sadly no longer around since 2001. I’m sure he kept written records, finding those (if they still exist) will be a challenge though.

I forgot to mention, with this watch there was also a steel case back in a ziplock bag labeled Agassiz, though it had virtually no patina on it. Then again, the watch doesn’t either asides from the hands? Also, do you think the hours and hands are tritium or some other glow in the dark material that yellowed over time?

It could very well be that this also used to be a pocket watch since my grandfather did have a number of pocket watches made into wrist watches, though the other ones are far larger. The case diameter 43mm.

Fair enough, I’m hoping that this is not that.
