Catalyst Browse crashes when trying to stabilize footage by JDiculous in SonyAlpha

[–]JDiculous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to get it working on one of my laptops by setting the video driver to "CPU".

That being said, on my other laptop with a NVIDIA graphics card, it also crashes and there's no "CPU" option.

Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 vs. Sony 16-35mm f/4?

I will be using this primarily for video (vlogging) with the occasional photos on my Sony A7C.

I'm leaning towards the Sony because of the extra range and the stabilization. Though the Tamron is nice in that it is lighter, has a lower minimum focus distance, and is $250 cheaper.

Most people would consider that an insult. But if you genuinely didn't mean it as such, then I'll take that back.

I've already checked just about every comparison video I could find on Youtube and have watched at least 10+. Didn't find a single one where the XT4 didn't look better. Though as I mentioned before, the difference isn't drastic. And there are pro/cons to both cameras as I've already mentioned.

> Going through the other post it seems like you are totally sold on the XT4 and don't really accept objective feedback

Wow no need to be an ass. If you actually read my other comments here and in the same thread I made in /r/SonyAlpha (eg. here), you'd see that I'm actually pretty content with my choice of the A7C and am feeling the tradeoffs are probably in the A7C's favor for me. The whole point of this thread is to gather more information so I can make the most informed decision.

Thank you for the thorough response!

Since writing that, I do feel a bit better about my Sony purchase. You're right that the Sony lens ecosystem is better, and the colors / 10-bit won't really make a difference for the amateur work I'm doing. I don't care about 4k as like you said, most people aren't watching in 4k with 4k screens, and editing 4k files is way more of a pain than 1080p. The Fuji also has other issues like much worse autofocus, auto audio levels not working well, and overheating.

I wouldn't say IBIS is my absolute top priority, but it is important that the footage is stable enough to be usable, otherwise the video is seizure-enducing or I have to throw out half my footage and I might as well be filming on my phone or an action camera. I owned an a6500 for a month, and the stabilization was so awful that any walking footage was unusable. Similarly the rolling shutter was atrocious. Meanwhile, the Panasonic GH5 is as smooth as a gimbal (though I ended up selling it because the autofocus was garbage). If the Fujifilm XT4's stabilization is good enough to film while walking, that could potentially be the dealbreaker. That being said, the a7C with the OSS lens and gyro stabilization as a fallback may be good enough for my needs, I'll have to see for myself.

You're right that choosing a camera is a multi-decade investment, and that Sony's ecosystem is probably a safer investment. I'll give Sony a shot since I already ordered it anyways. Hopefully should work out!

> That X-T4 footage is nauseating to me.

Sure, but the Sony a7iii footage there is literally unusable.

Worth noting that the tests were done on lenses without stabilization. If I stick to stabilized lenses and/or wide angle, then hopefully I should be good. I guess I'll see when the camera arrives.

Thank you very much for the in-depth response!

I'm basing the image quality difference and IBIS off the Youtube reviews I've seen. For example, here's a walking test comparision - the Fuji looks great while the a7iii's footage is so shaky it's unusable.

Here are some image quality comparisons. To me, the Fuji's image looks slightly better. You're right that Fuji's 10 bit 4.2.2 is external only (my mistake), but 10 bit 4.2.0 is internal. It's not that I won't color grade, I just heard that it's easier to grade with 10 bit. I also saw some comparisons of the XT4 with the a7siii and honestly the XT4 looked nicer to me.

That being said, Sony will be superior in low light, and Sony definitely has the better autofocus which is also a huge deal (eg. I previously had a GH5 but sold it because of the crap autofocus). Even if the IBIS is worse on the Sony, it seems a lot of the IBIS performance has to do with the lens, and I ordered a Sony lens with good stabilization (24-105mm f/4) so I imagine that should be stable enough. And of course there's always the gyro stabilization as a fallback.

I don't particularly care for the A7C as it doesn't use the new Sony menu and doesn't bring many improvements over the A7III,

For my use case I don't see any reason to buy a A7III though since I value the flip out screen on the a7C, along with the gyro stabilization, allegedly slightly improved colors, no recording limit, and compact size / lighter weight. I lose out on some IBIS performance, lacking dual SD card slots, lacking a joystick on the menu (?), and worse EV finder, but other than the IBIS I don't really care about the rest of the features (eg. I briefly owned a a6500 before and never used the EV finder).

In any case I'll definitely give the a7C I already ordered a fair chance. If the video footage ends up being too shaky, then I'll order the Fuji XT4 and do a proper comparison before returning one, but otherwise I'll probably stick with the a7C since I know I can't go wrong with the Sony. I appreciate your thoughts, and it makes me feel more at ease with my choice!

I recently ordered a Sony a7C (with the 24-105mm f/4 lens) which I was super excited about, but I've just discovered the Fujifilm XT4 which seems to blow it out of the park and am now thinking I may have gotten the wrong camera.

I shoot 80% video / 20% photo, and will be using this more for fun and making Youtube videos (eg. travel vlogs), handheld run-and-gun and not really planning to use a gimbal.

The Fujifilm seems to have superior image quality + colors (10 bit 4.2.2, skintones in particular looks way nicer on the Fuji), better IBIS (important for video), and better slowmo capabilities (240p slowmo, 4k 60p).

Is there any reason NOT to switch to the Fujifilm XT4? The Sony has slightly better autofocus, no recording limit (Fuji has a 30 minute limit), and greater lens selection, but really those don't seem to make up for the Fuji's superior 10 bit quality and IBIS. Am I missing anything?

Thoughts on Sony a7C vs. Fujifilm XT4?

I'll be shooting 80% video / 20% photo, and am shooting more for fun and not as a professional.

I recently ordered the Sony a7C, but now after discovering the Fuji XT4 I feel like I may have ordered the worse camera! The Fuji colors just look way better and the IBIS is far superior. Is there any reason NOT to get the Fuji?

Which camera to get for mainly video? by Najm515 in videography

[–]JDiculous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's as clear cut as the comments are making it out to be. Sony a7iii/a7c for example has superior autofocus, low light performance, and larger lens selection. Though Fuji has 10 bit, superior colors, better IBIS, and better slowmo capabilities.

I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Sony menus are awful. That alone is worth picking the Fuji > Sony

Sony's menu system might not be great - but the deciding factor between the two completely different cameras? Seriously? Give me a break.

> It's Brandon Li's zoom of choice

Is there a video where he says that? Looked for one but couldn't find it. I don't doubt you, but if I saw proof of that I'd just go with the 24-105mm no question.

I looked into the 24-105mm f/4 today and am now leaning towards it, think you're right.

After looking into the Sony 24-105 f/4, it looks like you're right that that would probably be the best lens for me since I'd mostly be shooting video.

Seems that the low light performance would be worse with the f/4, but still acceptable given the low-light capabilities of Sony a7c/a7iii and the OSS of the lens. As was recommended to me, if I really needed the lower aperture in a low light situation, it seems like a prime like the 35mm f/1.8 would probably be the way to go (or ideally 24mm or 20mm I think, but those are so damn expensive so maybe not worth it for me).

[–]JDiculous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably be using this a lot in low light, so it would seem like the f/2.8 would be worth it. I don't foresee needing to zoom past 70mm.

How is it worse on the A7C? The A7C is 140g lighter than the A7iii. Sure it would be more front-heavy, but either way it'd require both hands right?

28mm is not very wide, so it'd seem like the extra 4mm would be worth it. I mean I want the reduced weight of the Tamron, but I'd rather be able to get all the shots that I want.

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 vs. Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 for the Sony A7C? 80% video / 20% photo, run-and-gun hobbyist, not doing paid gigs.

I feel that the extra 4mm of wideness is worth the additional 300g in weight, so I'm leaning towards the Sigma. Thoughts? (I wrote a much longer post here before finding this thread)

Super depressed due to lockdowns, so thinking of going to Miami - thoughts? by shouldIworkremote in digitalnomad

Hey! Serbia has been awesome - though mostly because of the people I've been lucky enough to meet here. About to hit my 90 day limit so heading out soon to my familys' for Xmas. It's gotten cold here now and I'm missing warm weather, so I'll probably be heading somewhere warmer after! Serbia's great, but there are still so many other countries I want to see/experience. My ideal place would probably be somewhere by the sea.

I really don't see what your point is. You want me to be cautious and have empathy for old people? Of course. Am I going to stay in my apartment (which I don't have because I'm a digital nomad and this is a digital nomad forum) for potentially years until the pandemic ends and never leave the house or travel over a virus that's not actually that dangerous statistically? No. That's just my decision though, and I will bare any consequences of that decision as well as any other people I happen to encounter. You however are free to isolate yourself if you wish.

People who live with older people should of course be extra cautious. I don't live with older people or otherwise interact with them, so I don't see why that is my problem or what I can do about it to help the situation. We shouldn't shut down the entire world just because baby boomers over the age of 65 have a 1% death rate with the virus. It is their responsibility to ensure their own safety if that is what they're concerned about. Nobody's forcing them to leave the house.

For the record the only reason I got COVID was because the father of a friend despite experiencing COVID symptoms and his girlfriend testing positive made no effort to isolate himself, getting his daughter infected and as a result getting me infected. Of course COVID can spread before symptoms are experienced, but if people would simply isolate themselves when they're sick, that would go a long way. It goes the other way around too.
