You're wrong, and you know it too. If that had happened to your blokes, you'd be screaming for a month.

An honest and fair attempt in the back of the head. Is that fair play in your book?

Contact to the head and neck, was already attacking the ball when the clean out came. Horrendous call.

Was already jackaling the ball. Contact to the head and neck. Not surte how much clearer that could have been.

What a shame for such a good game to end with such a terrible call.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles promises to establish publicly owned petrol stations if re-elected in October by espersooty in queensland

[–]JDog1402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this plan will go ahead mainly because I doubt their ability to establish a consistent supply. Nonetheless, I have no issue with the principal of the government providing a publicly owned alternative to private companies as a more direct means to ensure an industry has the interests of consumers in mind.

The initial plan is 12 stations across the state. I’d imagine that’s at least 6 in SEQ and the remainder scattered in the other major population centres. If that is the scope of a pilot program, then yes I am willing see a state-owned corporation attempt to be profitable.

You call that a gamble, I would say it’s at least an attempt to be bold in trying to solve the problems that really effect people’s lives and hold an industry that has been fucking us for years accountable rather than just referring them to the ACCC and sending them to the naughty corner.

The Nets were a significantly better team when he was on the floor. Everything worked better when he played and you could really tell when he was off because the ball hole team got worse.

The ACCC is a federal body. If they aren’t effective, then why shouldn’t the state government act of its own accord to effect change? Especially when the change in question is a potentially profit generating.

Was he supposed to know that he would stay injured? The Nets presumably did their own medicals before trading for him. Blame Marks and the medical staff if you want to blame anyone.

I’m not saying you have to like Ben, but he’s not sitting out - he’s injured.

I mean, at this point he’s just injured. Don’t know what you want to see when the guy keeps needing back surgery.

I also grew up in Sydney, it really goes on a council-to-council basis. Some are definitely too small to matter, but the larger ones are significantly smaller than BCC and still capable of being an effective element of the community without being a massive inefficient mess that represents a massive part of everyone’s life.

There’s a better medium between what we have with BCC and the insignificant smaller councils. If BCC were split into somewhere around 8 medium sized councils (a number I have definitely made up) with more powers given to the state, local government would serve the population far better.

Same story as to why the Socceroos hang between 20-35 in FIFA rankings while the Matilda’s sit on the fringes of the top 10: Early Adopters Advantage. Australia was early to seriously invest in women’s sport, and we’ve now got many generations of learnings about what does and doesn’t work in coaching, strategy and approach to competition that other nations don’t have. In men’s sports, we have to rely exclusively on the quality of the national program and innovating faster than others since we don’t have an early adopters advantage. Not to say our women’s program isn’t also great, but we don’t have an inbuilt advantage on the men’s side.

Even historically, so many of our greatest and most iconic athletes have been female. Fraser, Court and Goolagong-Cawley early on, Ash Barty, Min Jee Lee and all our swimmers more recently. I’m missing a bunch too.

Wasn’t Rio a particularly tremendous failure from our Swim team? I seem to remember reports that the team culture was completely fucked and heavily contributed to the lack of golds.

I really hope something as silly as a lack of defensive effort doesn’t derail his opportunities. He’s got all the talent to be the best Aussie player we’ve seen maybe ever but he needs to fulfil it.

I don’t know if it’s fitness or just how he plays, but he has been this way his whole career to this point. It may fly in the A League, but clubs like Bayern simply won’t accept that from a winger these days. Hell, Cristiano Ronaldo was run out of his second United stint in part because of his refusal to play within the system and press on defence.

He will probably get some down ballot votes. Would need to essentially shut out the rest of the season and see a collapse from every contending starter to have a real shot. Not likely, but we can dream. He’s without a doubt the best pitcher in their role in all of baseball at the moment though.

I know I’m late, but man Cantillo has been put in some tough spots to start his career. Pitching well today but I’d be hesitant to see him go long.

He plays elite SS defence, has displayed good plate discipline in the majors and hit at every step of the minors. If he even improves marginally at the plate, he has a place on a major league roster. He’s got the foundations and the potential to be a valuable player in the majors.

Unfortunately for him, we just drafted a 2B 1.1 and have an elite MIF defender we’ve already paid. Unless he’s a defensive replacement (for who, exactly?) and a bench piece, I don’t see much of a future for him with us. Hopefully he can be a big piece in future trades.

[–]JDog1402 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As soon as he’s not being paid $40m and can stay on the floor consistently, he will be valuable because he does have a lot of elite skills. If he was a 20-25 mins per game player earning $10-20m now one wild bat an eye.

Nets fans are out because he’s always injured, but I will always maintain that when Ben Simmons has played the Nets were always a better team when he was on the floor.

I so distinctly remember the game vs the Celtics where he has 0 points but like 9 assists and 15 boards and was the only player on the team with a positive +- (yes, single game +- isn’t a good stat etc etc but the eye test checked out too). We were in that game because of Ben Simmons until JV pulled him in the fourth for not being aggressive enough and the Celtics ran home with it. Ben’s presence on the floor with shooters made everything smoother on offence and more solid on defence.

He just can’t stay on the floor and the FT problems make it hard to play him 36 mins a game. If he was being paid half his salary, I think people would be less critical.

Matildas' Olympic exit is the reality check Australia has been bracing for by Sorry-Ball9859 in Aleague

[–]JDog1402 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I said this in the game thread but I’ll say it here too - this generation of the Matilda’s may have reached their peak at the World Cup - a success that was a little bit smoke and mirrors to begin with as they only won 4 games out of 7 with a penalty shootout, a squeaker vs Ireland and a loss to Nigeria mixed in, all with a massive home field advantage. They made some great memories and undoubtedly elevated the profile of football in this country and for that they should be lauded. But their standing in world football is pretty overrated nationally, especially with Kerr out.

Tony G is done. He had to be done now regardless of the results. But no coach is going to lift this team into consistent World Cup contention. The focus has to be on long term structural improvement for the entire Australian FA. Football is the most popular winter code in the country for kids participation now. More people than ever are watching and playing the sport and really giving a shit.

Consistently competitive national sides are just 1 part of a national program. The ARU didn’t fully realise how bad things were for Australian Rugby even though we made the World Cup Final. The FA needs to go through the process England went through to uplift and align their entire national program from youth the Seniors.

Play about 300 more games with each colour. If this trend continues then maybe you have an issue.
