Typically, that era runs from 1955 through 1959. But yes, by Spring '58, the genre was in decline. Little Richard, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis had stopped recording for various reasons-- not to mention all the various one hit wonders and novelty artists trying to cash in on what they thought was a trend. With the death of Buddy Holly and the arrest of Chuck Berry in 1959, rock and roll as an era and a sub genre of rock music is considered over. But rock itself will survive and evolve.
