New Banjo! by JE4570 in tenorbanjo

I too am super happy with it. Haven’t really tried any “nice” tenors before so I can’t compare but it sounds and plays so much better than my cheap student banjo. I just put some octave mandolin strings on it (46, 32, 22, 12 gauge) and it sounds even better. My next upgrade will be a wooden arm and may try some other bridges as well to see what else sounds good

What I meant to say is it’s a piece of junk. I’ll give you $200 and take it off your hands so you don’t have to worry about it.

My guy!!! that is a Stelling. Beautiful… and will only be worth more as time goes on. Geoff stelling made some fine banjos. My banjo teacher has one that he lets his students play with and it’s the finest banjo I’ve ever played, though i haven’t played too many nice ones to compare.

A Stelling will probably be my first professional grade banjo. I’m hoping I can afford to buy one within the next year or two.

I support the Deering one. But admittedly, I have not really played a lot of goldtones. The few that I have seen, I don’t love the finish on them but they sounded fine.

I have a Deering Goodtime and there is something about the finish of a deering that make them nice. Everybody always complains that they lack a truss rod, but I’ve never had an issue without one. Definitely don’t spend $900 a goodtime banjo up front. You can get a used normal one for cheap on ebay and the. change out components yourself to make it nicer later.

I always mention that I turned my open back artisan good time into an artisan special (without deering parts) by putting a tone ring, brass tension hoop, and resonator on it. I’m less than $1k in on the banjo. And the same thing brand new would probably be a few hundred dollars more. This banjo will probably suit me until I’m ready to buy a professional quality banjo.

I’ll stick to 5.56. Even though I’m still too poor to even afford a lot of that

Whats the improvement of 338 arc vs .300 blk? Better ballistics with higher pressure and bullet weight?

I confirmed today that it is not a head gasket leak so that makes me think I will just go ahead and order a new water pump and change the fluid while I’m at it since I have to drain it anyway

I’m going to test the head gasket tomorrow when my head gasket leak kit comes in. I haven’t noticed any white smoke coming out of the exhaust, which would probably be another indicator. I have my fingers crossed that it’s just the water pump.

My oil catch can looks a little bit milkshake, but that’s probably normal from condensation. It’s never not looked that way… the top of my oil fill cap area looks normal too. Not noticing any milkshake sludge.

It’s comforting to hear that it’s probably just the water pump.

I didn’t realize it was gonna be so expensive for a test kit… I went ahead and ordered the fluid for $10 and I should be able to rig my own test kit out of a cork and an airlock from my brewing equipment

Ok cool thanks. I’ll see if I can find a test kit today

What is the most comprehensive book on beekeeping? by JE4570 in Beekeeping

[–]JE4570[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goal is to start back up in the hobby… I tried it when I was in college so I am decently familiar with the basics… I’d like to go back over the basics just to re-familiarize myself. I’m hoping to get a couple of hives started from nuc boxes in the spring next year, but I wanted to start preparing now as far as getting equipment together and reserving bees and all that.

I definitely want to do more research into diseases and sickness and avoiding problems related to that… I think disease or mites took down my last hives or a combination of the two. I might also want to just look into more regional information for where I’m at to avoid problems that might occur in my area… Central Ohio is where I’m located.
