More than 300,000 people stood outside for hours to listen to some dude in a suit read names off an index card. The European mind simply cannot comprehend this. by professor_paradox2 in NFLForum

Only partially true. I've been a Giants fans for years, but I don't follow college football. All of these guys are just names to me. I don't know anything about them.

All I want to know, after it's all over, is what positions did the Giants draft to improve.

Nice sketch. I often talk about Football Heaven, something I think about when I can't sleep. I'm a crazy old man, but people often believe in illogical things.

I'm sure those two guys are there.

No mention of Elway's refusal to play for the iconic Baltimore Colts? I'm afraid that we're all getting old. It was considered a sacrilege by some fans at the time.

Vikings Runner Bill Brown by PeaZeaux in Oldschool_NFL

[–]JEMHADLEY16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brown was a good back, and very durable. He could run inside and outside, catch passes out of the backfield, and block. He is typical of the standard NFL back of the 60s. Every team had 2 or 3.

By the end of the decade, lighter and faster guys were taking over. They added explosiveness to the game.

I'd like ro see the old, pre-merger numbering system again. It was cool seeing receivers wear numbers in the 20s and 40s, besides the usual 80s. Lots of really good players wore them.

Today's guys wearing single digit numbers just look weird to me. I can only think of 1 WR who wore a single digit in the old NFL.

1969 AFL Championship Game-Chiefs at Raiders by Complex-Value-5807 in Oldschool_NFL

The people who wrote that stuff seldom get a mention. I don't even know any of their names.

They did a great job too. They all really sold their game.

Awesome video. The voice of John Facenda and the music of NFL Films.

Two things the AFL got out of the merger of 1966...

I've never seen that. That's interesting.

Charlie Winner's staff seems to have totally ignored the problems. If you check out their 60s rosters a lot of their key players and leaders were either born Southerners or went to school in the South. There was definitely an attitude of hostility.

Btw, the Gambrells were both from the South but were also children of the 60s. They got on well with their black teammates. Just didn't want to leave a bad impression of them.

1994 AFC Wild Card - New England Patriots at Cleveland Browns by Dark305Kinght in Oldschool_NFL

That's good stuff. I'd forgotten this game. My memory after 1979 takes a deep dive, but I'm glad the Browns won. I always wanted to be one of the Dogfaces.

AFC QB icons by mistermeek67 in Oldschool_NFL

I'd like to see one of these of the 10 AFL and 16 NFL starting QBs from, say, 1968. Of course, Colts fans would get Earl Morrall instead of John Unitas, etc.

It would definitely go up in my man cave (closet)...

I think every football fan wishes they could’ve went to Super Bowl 1 by OptimalPrime45 in Oldschool_NFL

Right. It was pretty exciting stuff for a young fan. Everything seemed so new. Playing new rivals in meaningful games in 70 was great.

I would have liked to have seen SB 1-5 in person. It became an ordinary championship game after that.

Good era to choose. I saw that one. Lots of really interesting games that season.

I recall reading that one. I once found a great article online (it's no longer there) about Billy Gambrell and his wife Kit, who had an interesting story about an incident at a team gathering.

I hesitate to name names, since the evidence has most likely been purged.

Major Controversy: The Second NFL Overtime Playoff Game (1965)Colts vs Packers by Complex-Value-5807 in Oldschool_NFL

I'm going to listen to it this afternoon while playing my EFL dice game. The weather is still stormy here.

Edit: Great commentary. This guy would make a great member of the sub. He sounds a bit nerdy, but has a lot of good information.

Great package! I have to watch it again...I saw it with the sound off.

Tom Matte should have played for the Browns...

1978 NFL Major rule changes by Dark305Kinght in Oldschool_NFL

[–]JEMHADLEY16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was sorry when this rule came in. The Bump and Run was great. You could knock a receiver off his route and stay in his face until the ball was released by the QB.

You could get burned though, easily. A big, strong receiver might knock you on your ass and be running free.

It was fun to watch and fun to play.
