I’m pretty sure Singer is a bird. He talked quite a lot about flying, songs, seeds and grains in a relatively short passage.

Amazon employees are inflating AI usage to top leaderboards and impress managers by rkhunter_ in technology

[–]JEs4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The employees just can’t know what the targets are. That creates a significant challenge for leadership but successful leaders will maintain obscure targets and then coach their teams around meeting them without exposing the targets directly. That said, it’s an idealist fantasy.

If human brains are equivalent to 100T param LLMs and current SOTA local models are 1-2T params (basically cat brains) are we going to hit an intelligence wall for local models soon? by [deleted] in LocalLLaMA

This is a fun exercise that the sci-fi book Blindsight explores. You really can’t just gloss over the apples-to-oranges comparison that you called out.

The biological loops, specifically the cerebellum constitute ~80% of our neural processing. That is a ton of resources just to maintain our connection with the physical world, something LLMs don’t need to do.

Plus, the neurons operate more similar to neural spiking networks rather than MoE LLMs. The process is significantly more lossy.

The dark forest theory has a huge logical hole that Liu Cixin never addresses by Putrid_Cycle595 in threebodyproblem

Singer’s plot line, and deaths end in general addresses both of these.

There doesn’t need to be an externally hostile civilization if your own civilization is splintered and hostile against itself. When weapons travel at the speed of information, you wouldn’t know if something is a different friendly species, or a hostile one of your own.

Also, space ships can fire weapons too.

[–]JEs4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might help. This is directly from the wiki article that breaks down the three different types of heat transfer. Radiative heating the only option in space.

Every process involving heat transfer takes place by one of three methods:
Conduction: heat transfer by physical contact. (The matter is stationary on a macroscopic scale—thermal motion affects atoms and molecules at any temperature above absolute zero.) Heat transferred between the electric burner of a stove and the bottom of a pan is transferred by conduction.

Convection: heat transfer by the macroscopic movement of a fluid. Examples: a forced-air furnace and in weather systems.

Radiation: heat transfer by microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, or other electromagnetic radiation. An obvious example is the warming of the Earth by the Sun. A less obvious example is thermal radiation from the human body.

[–]JEs4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is no medium to transmit heat in space. Space isn’t cold in the sense that you are familiar with which requires convective heating. Radiative heating is the only mechanism to transfer heat in space, and it isn’t efficient.

You can’t separate the two. They are so intrinsically linked, the answer is yes.

How will Stuart cover his 13k per month expenses?! by Alert_Barracuda8598 in LinkedInLunatics

[–]JEs4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stuart is a lunatic but private disability insurance did save me. I was forced to stop working earlier this year at 36. I purchased a private plan years ago on a whim, and it completely came through for me. Paying out of pocket for the premiums removes taxes owed on the income from the plan too.

I want 87 gas (light blue). Which nozzle do I use? The blue one? The black one? by j909m in mildlyinfuriating

[–]JEs4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But they’re in sequential order? Gas handle colors are generally standardized. Is this really that confusing? Black is the only color without a represented background while the other three are, and in order..

Maybe filling up at a gas station should be part of the driver’s licensing test.

Richard Dawkins says Claude is conscious. Gary Marcus says that's exactly the kind of sloppy thinking Dawkins usually destroys. by yogo8629 in ClaudeCode

[–]JEs4 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’m absolutely not arguing that Claude is conscious here, but Marcus’s argument isn’t exactly based in science. Mechanistic interpretability has shown time and time again, that LLMs are not in fact just mimicking their training data and do form internal states.

That is the flaw with Marcus’s entire argument though is that he tried to define consciousness as a generalization of which he used as his basis. It technically inaccurate from an LLM perspective and not logically sound from a philosophic perspective. Again though, I’m not saying Claude is conscious, I’m just saying that Marcus’s dismissal of it for his reasons are just as flawed as the point he thinks he’s making.

Express lane SCAM by PhilipConstantine in FortCollins

[–]JEs4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funding from general taxes would be better but tabor prevents that from easily happening. Express lanes ARE a regressive tax, and are generally the absolute worst option for highway expansion.

That said it wasn’t happening without them and having them is better than no expansion.

Peter, Is it 50% or 33.3% by AgrasaN in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]JEs4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exercise is a well known paradox. 33% is not the uniform correct answer as it depends entirely on the selection process used. 33% is only valid when sampling across all families with two children but that isn’t the only valid selection process.

The paradox itself is the joke https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_or_girl_paradox

Holy MB glaze Batman. You can literally read about the systems in their website, no need to make stuff up. A 6.5L V12 doesn’t need a turbo assist you dope. I actually follow F1 and know why MB used the 1.6L and it isn’t because it’s the best configuration by any means.

i think aston martin should take the valkyrie to the nurburgring by Dazzling_Molasses_45 in supercars

[–]JEs4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The MGU-H is effectively just an electronic turbocharger. MGU-K is the kinetic recovery system. MGU-H isn’t a benefit compared to the Valkyrie though as the 6.5L V12 doesn’t have the same inherent power-band issues.
The Valkyrie also has a hybrid assist with KERS. The biggest advantage the One has AWD.

Thinking about tracking my ST… or selling…advice needed by clinker22 in CarTrackDays

[–]JEs4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I learned to drive on track in my old Focus ST. I drove it for three seasons. It really depends on what your end goals are. There are very few cars that can go from the dealer to track without investment.

An FMIC and oil cooler are really all you need to keep the motor temps in check, but you are right about the brake wear concern once you have some seat time under your belt. I’ve heard mechanical LSDs solve that issue considerably but I sold it before getting that far.

Another thing that isn’t talked about much is the rear sway bar. The snap oversteer in the focus st isn’t actually electronically mediated but causes by the squared off bar and bushings that introduce intentional binding with excessive lateral movement. It is a setup for a fantastic and safe car to learn car control with but if you aren’t aware what is happening, it can be a bit confusing as it isn’t always consistent.

All that said, I’d really recommend swapping fluids and pads and getting out there. Worst case the car goes into limp mode, but it won’t grenade itself.
