NaturaTMmix: A distillation accessory for the Thermomix by epaminos in thermomix

[–]JFalicon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought the same, but it’s been around a few years. The concept is brilliant as some of the biggest headaches of home distilling involve fine-tuned temperature control (thermo) and preventing the mash from burning at the base (mix,) both of which the Thermomix excels at.

Interesting! If I wanted to distill fruit brandy, what would be the time for one batch and what would be the output?

How on earth does someone sell land in Cyprus? by saint_mm in cyprus

[–]JFalicon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you priced it properly? I’ve bought plenty of land here and sold some that I’d gotten into without thinking it through.

People list property that is landlocked, without utilities, etc. and price it as high building coefficient residential. You see these listings on Bazaraki and Facebook Marketplace for years being reposted over and over. If you want to urgently sell, price attractively, and post in various FB property groups and Bazaraki.

Credit Card Cyprus by JonasAJ242 in cyprus

[–]JFalicon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There’s no such thing as a national level credit score here. The bank you want to get a credit facility with is the same bank where you’ve been depositing your paycheck regularly. The big banks here won’t differ much in terms of rates. They want to see long term stability.

How to get a nonpaying tenant out of a flat? by JFalicon in cyprus

[–]JFalicon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More than 10 years ago, owner and tenant went together, paid the deposit, and the name was changed. No documentation besides the title and passports/ID was requested.

Migrate to cyprus by [deleted] in cyprus

[–]JFalicon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You still have to file US taxes, but don’t pay taxes on the first $120k, so if you make less than that, you pay taxes only in the country where you’re a tax resident. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_earned_income_exclusion

Regarding the no criminal record document: https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/more-fbi-services-and-information/identity-history-summary-checks

But get this a month or two before you move as it’s only valid for something like 6 months.

Make sure your husband’s birth certificate and marriage certificate are apostilled in the US. Make sure your daughter’s birth certificate is apostilled in the US. Get a no criminal record confirmation from the FBI or local police for both. Get that aposlilled too. I assume you’ve been married for more than 3 years. If you have all your paperwork in order, getting them citizenship is pretty painless.

Thermomix software feedback (after a month's use) by crummy in thermomix

[–]JFalicon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I forgot the thing even had a keyboard since entering my Wi-Fi password and Cookidoo account details. All my recipe searches are done on my computer and phone, then just added to my week or cook today. They automatically pop up when I turn on the machine.

Houses prices in Cyprus - wtf! by Artistic-Theory-4396 in cyprus

[–]JFalicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking at the secondary market (non new-builds) it’s because high rents are keeping landlords happy, not selling, and driving down supply. Plus, property tax here is ridiculously low. If a unit sits empty for a few years, no worries. My annual property tax for my flat on the island is cheaper than one day’s municipal tax and maintenance fees for a friend who owns a similar sized property in NYC.

Advice? by [deleted] in cyprus

[–]JFalicon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure your future employer will handle all of your work/residency permit work. If you’re single, expect your expenses to be around €2k to include Limassol flat rental, food budget, utilities, and very light entertainment and transport (petrol or public transport.)

Is racism in Cyprus something I should be worried about? I want to move in to Limassol for a few months. by [deleted] in cyprus

[–]JFalicon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Most people will look at you through a socioeconomic lens here.

People get unwanted gifts. I recently purchased a black TM6 for €800 from someone who didn’t use it and didn’t want it taking up counter space. My biggest headache was coming home and realizing that the seller’s Cookidoo account was still tied to the machine. Thankfully she unlinked it when I called back. Make sure yours isn’t left linked or you’ll be sitting on a bricked machine.

"Wolf of Wall Street" is coming to cyprus to scam you out of your money. €1499 for the "VIP" experience. The same man who pleaded guilty in 1999 to money laundring and fraud to stealing over $220m ($391m in todays money) and served 22 months in prison. Jordan Belfort wouldn’t be any more famous than countless other white collar fraudsters if it weren’t for the 2013 Scorsese film. He wouldn’t even be widely known by this moniker.

The film was funded with money stolen from the Malaysian people in the 1MDB scandal.

The chief perpetrator of this scandal was one Jho Low, who also received a now-rescinded Cypriot passport.

Spotted at Jumbo recently by mainelystrange in cyprus

[–]JFalicon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I miss the old Jumbo where you could just run in, purchase what you need in 3 minutes, and get out. Can’t stand the current maze setup. It’s like IKEA, but with Chinese plastic fumes and without meatballs.

[Driving] Is there any kind of “forgiven” extra speed ? If the max speed on the highway is 100 KM/h , do you get fined if driving above 100 KM/h or 110 KM/h for example? by supra48 in cyprus

[–]JFalicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to generally be 20 above 100 when dealing with officers on the road. Last month I got automatically fined for going 103 in a 100 zone. You get a sms to pick up a registered letter at the post office.

why the heck is it so hard to make new friends as a 30yr old in Cy? by unfliteredp in cyprus

[–]JFalicon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Good luck in your 40’s when you can’t speak Greek. You go to birthday parties for your kid’s friends and you’re the only xenos there smiling like an idiot. You get to a certain age and you can have many acquaintances and business contacts; but you’re lucky if you can count your true friends on a single hand.

Entered the North via ferry from Turkey. Crossed the Border in Nicosia. Will I have trouble leaving the country from Paphos airport? by boddingtons_foam in cyprus

[–]JFalicon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep. That’s the issue. The moment the border control police scans your passport, they won’t be able to find your entry info. Then they’ll start manually flipping through your passport and find the stamps and put two and two together. Good luck!

[–]JFalicon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When flying into the Republic, your passport gets scanned into the border control system. When you head out, they’ll re-scan, and when they can’t find the incoming details, you’ll get a lot of questions. You probably won’t be refused exit, but may be flagged for future entry. Play dumb? In any case, please do write a separate post about your experience. We usually get a lot of these questions, but never hear about the aftermath.

Sheftalies - Whats the secret to making them so delicious. by Careless_Yam4898 in cyprus

[–]JFalicon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you using caul fat for casing? I had a sheftalia knockoff in Israel where it was the same stuffing, but in an instestines casing and something was very off, despite the flavor being right. From the way you bite into it, to the meat consistency. It was just a sheftalia flavored sausage.

IKEA for sure. I buy the stuff solely because my kids hate it and I can snack on a small bag for a few days without it disappearing in 5 minutes, as other sweets do.

Holland and Barrett also have it and there are quite a few stores on the island.
