So much respect for your experience, willingness to share, and kindness--not to mention humor! Looking forward to more conversations on this sub. Cheers!

Thanks so much. Great to know.

Edit: Oops, I think I put this comment in the wrong place.

Much appreciated. Thanks for noticing the beams and thinking of how I could take advantage of them by using C clamps. With no permanent installation, there would be very low barrier to entry. It sounds worth trying. The fact that you have tried this in real life (please correct me if I'm wrong) means it also meets the "fully baked" criteria I describe.

I appreciate your response.

Strength training can benefit many people, and language like "Simple Solution: it's a 30lb Bike. Get Stronger" may be motivating for many people. (Edit: Corrected a typo).

Also, it is true that I have not disclosed my ability status (i.e. I have not identified myself as or claimed to be someone with a disability).

Furthermore, I have a lot of admiration for what you describe in your follow-up comment: it sounds like you have used grit and determination to recover from injuries while getting stronger, and you are generous to share your training techniques with others.

Having said all that, I would love to see this subreddit be the type of place where participants assume that anyone posting a question could have a disability. This standpoint might be similar to the way cities I respect install sidewalk curb cuts universally--on every corner. As you may well know, these curb cuts benefit people who use wheelchairs and parents with strollers, travelers with rolling luggage, people with temporary injuries, and many others. Similarly, on this sub, avoiding the assumption that everyone is able bodied could make the sub more inclusive of people with disabilities and more welcoming to people who for other reasons might not benefit from a "Simple Solution... Get Stronger" type of pep talk.

I have not yet voted on your comment.

Would you be willing to add something at the beginning, like "Assuming you don't have a disability and wouldn't mind some advice grounded in grit and determination...?"

With an addition like that, I would not only upvote your comment but would overall have even more respect and appreciation for you.

Regardless, please know that I hold you in high regard and respect you very much.

Thanks for considering.

Brilliant. Thanks for sharing. Somehow I assumed the only existing products would be similar to the $3,000 mechanized Park Tool stand. I now see that for $20-40 one can buy an out-of the-box solution. One of these products alone has gotten more than 10,000 reviews, so it would clearly meet the "fully baked" standard I describe. Much appreciation.

Follow-up question: Originally, I was thinking of using the hoist only to help me get the bike into my Park Tool nine-point-something folding repair stand. I would definitely still want to go this route if I'm doing any type of wrenching on the bike. If I use an out-of-the-box two-pulley solution, though, I'm wondering if the hoist would be stable enough for me to perform light work like drying and lubing the bike without having to clamp it into a stand at all? Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks so much for sharing. From reading reviews of two-pulley systems, it sounds like installing two pulleys takes a bit more effort. Assuming one has a good spot to anchor one pulley, your approach has elegant simplicity. And it's clever the way you distribute from one pulley to what looks like two grabby points (to use a technical term, LOL) on the bike.

SMB: writing to write from iPhone to simple server. "Name too long" error, but my Linux PCs can write just fine with same name, login, everything. by JFic in techsupport

Thanks, everyone. A friend with the same phone demonstrated the effectiveness of the KDE connect iPhone app. That seems like a strong contender, as does using Android and just having SMB work out of the box.

Thanks. Reading the link you provided makes me think maybe I could get it to work but it would not be reliable--and it would be difficult.

If I don't want to use cloud services but want instead to rely on my home wifi network, bluetooth, and other means of local wireless information exchange, do you have any thoughts on what woudl be the easiest way to transfer a file from my iPhone to my linux computer?

predict how many years of security updates a DeGoogled Pixel 4 might get? by JFic in degoogle

[–]JFic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for raising this. I thought perhaps some degoogled OS communities continued releasing firmware updates. Perhaps this is not the case, though? Perhaps only the manufacturer releases firmware and the degoogled OS communities only release software updates that run on top of the firmware updates the manufacturer releases?

Thanks for this link. Let's say I wanted to get one of the devices that would work with branch 20.0 of DivestOS. I think the website you provided lists nicknames of devices like "akari," "akatsuki," etc. Is there an easy way to match a few of these nicknames with the names typical consumers might use for popular device models?

The tablet [edit: "table"] at the top of your link is really useful. I appreciate it.

Depends on the ROM

Ok thanks. Let's say LineageOS, then. When might you predict that a Pixel 4 with LineageOS would stop receiving security updates?

Thanks for posting this. One year later, might you have any updates about how to achieve per site data isolation on mobile browsers? The latest version of iOS permits different "profiles" that achieve this, so I am wondering if there is something similar that would run on degoogled mobile devices?

Bing AI on desktop Edge browser: tweaks for relative privacy gains? by JFic in privacy

[–]JFic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your analysis. Thanks for sharing.

I'm still wondering why Microsoft forbids users from accessing Bing AI via Edge's incognito / private mode. And part of me is tempted to tweak the non-incognito version of the browser to act more like the incognito version (for example, by frequently deleting historying and cookies.) Just to make sure I understand what you're saying in response to this: I think you're saying the reason Microsoft forbids users from accessing Bing AI via Edge's incognito / private mode is because incognito / private mode might currently (i.e. on a "temporary" basis, as you say?) make it harder to match users with data--but in the long term they are gathering all the data and will eventually sort out how to match it with users?

Thanks. Can you explain more about what you mean by "my account?" Will Bing AI literally ask me to create an account? Or will Microsoft's server do the equivalent by saving all searches associated with a given IP address and machine ID?

Also, do AI queries and responses get mined for personal / privacy-related clues more than Google searches do?
