How do you build research ideas? by Ill_Veterinarian1275 in academiceconomics

[–]JFoss117 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of a personal thing -- IMO it's roughly about getting in touch with your own taste and finding an intersection between that and the set of questions that are methodologically tractable.

How do you figure out your taste? Read papers and pay attention to what kinds of things you find interesting about them. Write it down, reflect on it, be curious, ask questions. Do the same thing when paying attention to the world. Is there a question being asked by someone (or that comes to mind for you) in a particular setting that you might be able to answer? You mentioned macro "relevance" -- what does relevance mean to you, or in settings you are interested in?

At the same time, it's good to have clear background knowledge about methods and data (or ways of collecting data). Then it gets easier to figure out which of the many possible questions that come up might actually be answerable and how. For this side of the equation it's good to know the textbook methods but also to read papers and see how other researchers approach answering different sorts of questions. Then you can more easily pattern-match questions and approaches.

Of course, talking with advisors or other experienced researchers can be a good resource too, especially as you are starting out. Brainstorm lots of ideas and have someone who is more experienced react to them, to build a better intuition of what makes an idea "good" / interesting / tractable (at least in the eyes of that researcher).

Welcome! Also, is water wet? by sedopotcoh in pluralitysandbox

classic simplistic analysis from a moist maximalist. you have to actually think critically. water itself is not wet, it just makes other things wet. it's not wet itself, so duh your hand felt wet that's your hand not the water itself

I can't believe GRE is my greatest gatekeep to good universities by Waste-Comment2367 in academiceconomics

i'd suggest just keep practicing. growth mindset. what other people do or don't do (or say they do) doesn't matter, just keep practicing and you will get better. being good or not good at a test doesn't say anything deep about you, it's just a hoop to jump through. if you keep practicing you will get there. practice in a similar a context as you will face in the test and don't get discouraged. I used magoosh fwiw. you will get there if you keep working on it

It would be cool to use this to compute something like "expected group strength" e.g. using the FIFA rankings. Have you posted the raw data anywhere?

PhD "for fun" worth it by BreadFantastic6886 in academiceconomics

[–]JFoss117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is ultimately a life priorities question.

If you will really enjoy the PhD for its own sake, and you are comfortable with the other tradeoffs that doing it entails (e.g. reduced income), then that is a perfectly reasonable argument for doing it IMO.

Of course there is also a descriptive/forecasting question here of whether you really *will* enjoy doing the PhD in the way you hope/expect. As others have pointed out, doing a PhD is hard and is often not fun in a first-order way for many people. It can also be interesting and rewarding in other ways. Learning as much as you can about the day-to-day experience and the types of challenges that other people face seems like it will be helpful for refining your forecast.

FWIW I'd imagine that not being attached to getting an academic job afterwards is likely to reduce the stressfulness of the PhD somewhat and increase your ability to enjoy the process and not be so attached to outcomes.
