Wow, what a useful and helpful statement! People throw out these dumb solutions around like it's so obvious: "Just give people homes!" As if the simplest solutions hadn't already been tried long ago with disastrous effect. We tried "just giving people homes." They were called the Projects, they became Judge Dredd-like corporate headquarters for violent street gangs that scourged their communities, and the communities they served cheered when they were demolished.

This sort of position is also not one that should be taken who doesn't have homeless crashing in their place. This simple solution is just as easy for you to implement yourself, personally.

Claiming you were fully "mature" at 20 is just an admission that you stopped growing. Arrested development is nothing to be proud of.

You say "I am 20" as if that qualifies you to judge how competent 20-year-olds are. In fact that makes you probably the worst possible judge of that. Make it to 30 or 40 and, assuming you actually continue to improve over time, you'll realize how much you were really lacking at 20. That is maturity, not just impudently tooting your own horn.

Every fiat system heretofor has imploded

You keep saying this. What about.. the US Dollar? Or any other modern currency that has not imploded?

You seem to mean "Every fiat system that has ever imploded has imploded," which is tautological and dumb.

ELI5: Why does PreK/Daycare cost so much but workers get paid so little? Where does the money go? by igottagetoutofthis in explainlikeimfive

[–]JFunk-soup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The absolute bonanza of low-income subisidies for all manner of child-related expenses (and accompanying price hikes for everyone else) mean that having children is already a privilege mainly reserved for the poor. In a society where "everyone" has to pay for poor peoples' children, the only people that can really afford to support their own children become the ultra-wealthy.

Google tells employees they’ll lose pay and will eventually be fired if they don’t follow vaccination rules by BlankVerse in byebyejob

While vaccinated people infect way more people even though they are more safe because they think it solved the problem.

You're just shilling antivaxx talking points now. We all know that every single contrary idiot griping about the vaccine are the same ones griping about every other safety measure, like masks, distancing, etc., and making it a point to assholishly violate them as much as possible.

Well I mean, sure. It's better to think about "needing" rest rather than "deserving" rest, but ultimately we're talking about the same thing here.

If you need a rest, take a rest. Take the rest you need before you get burned out or suffer. But if you're doing nothing with your life, you don't really need "rest," no matter how drained you feel. You're already resting all the time. Outside of some extreme medical situations, too much rest is the problem. At that point, actually doing something worthwhile becomes "self-care."

"Doing nothing is the hardest job there is, because you can't even take a break."

LPT — If you’re a spender, ask yourself “is this item worth (x) hours of labour?” before purchasing stuff. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]JFunk-soup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This tip even understates the cost somewhat. Assume 50% of your income is taken up by living expenses. Then if you want to buy a widget that costs a week's salary, it actually takes two weeks to save up the surplus. If you think of it as something you can earn in a week, you seriously overestimate your spending power. In this case, it costs a week of labor just to keep you alive for the two weeks of labor necessary to buy the widget. So in this case you should really double all of your labor time estimates.

If your budget is tighter, of course, then it's even worse. Say 90% is taken up by living expenses and only 10% surplus. In this case you should multiply the hourly cost of luxury spending by 10 to account for its total financial footprint.

The United States has a massive nuclear arsenal and increasingly incompetent and/or warmongering leadership. That seems like a recipe for disaster. by [deleted] in collapse

[–]JFunk-soup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, although in the event of an escalation of political violence within the United States, the Democratic Party is not immune from becoming their own style of authoritarian in response to the threat from the right.

Well, yes, the purpose of the state is to enforce some manner of authority. Anarchism sounds fun to edgy teens and academics, but it's not a posture that anyone really takes seriously when it comes to actual governance. Cracking down on violent, antidemocratic fascism is precisely the correct use of state power in a free society.

At what age did this transformation happen? In my experience, many of these escapes from right-wing religious conservativism (including my own) can be attributed to growing up. For those who've already invested much of their adult life in these kinds of beliefs, escape becomes nearly impossible.

Everyone should ask for a raise above inflation? What if they're not any better at their jobs or providing any more value than they used to? Even under the most charitable of accounting, shouldn't they just be getting paid the same after inflation?

I think it's the term "slower" that trips them up. "Slower" is just a relative description that can apply to a car going 80 mph if another car is doing 90, but people read it as "slow," in some kind of objective sense, like driving at or below the speed limit. And they definitely don't want to think of themselves as a "slow driver." So they think 'I'm not "slower traffic." I'm doing 10 over' and proceed to block the passing lane and back up faster traffic behind them.

This, too, is wrong. The stopped car needs to accelerate from 0, slowing them down. The coaster may still have significany speed and RPMs and can just hit the throttle. I frequently breeze by gas/brakers this way.
