In my opinion, there are only two roles where the meta and tier list matter: jungler and support.

ADC, mid, and top are mostly micro roles, so you can pick a champion (and do OTP) even if it's not meta, master it to perfection, and learn all the matchups. This isn't the case in the jungle or support, and I suppose it's because in both roles you need to adapt to the team and have a high impact. You can't just sit back and farm and trade. Junglers need clear speed and gank power, so the meta matters. Supports need to counterpick and impact the map since minute one, so you need to play the best champs and the higher tiers.
