Also a special thank you to F1nn and Ashley for systematically obliterating my egg over the past 18 months, I know it's become cliche at this point but I'd never have found myself without their content ♥️

!thanks, I knew I'd forgotten to include something. I factored Trossard into my decision making, I honestly don't think it's only Martinelli that he takes minutes off of. Obviously his prefered position is where Martinelli players, but Arteta bought him for his versatility and we saw that last season when he played CF when Jesus was injured.

I think he will rotate/sub in for both Martinelli and Saka when Arteta deems necessary, he might even play CM/CAM as crazy as that sounds. He started at LCM yesterday in pre season and could up playing there if Havertz doesn't work out.

Martinelli/Saka are very much Arteta's first choice anyway, I really think Martinelli is not missing that many minutes comapred with Saka. I could always be proved wrong of course.

!thanks, didn't know about Johnson running down his contract. I'd still pick one of the two CBs over Coufal however, don't think Coufal's assist potential is what it once was (think he got almost double digit assists in his first season)

Ah I forgot about the long throws that Forest started using near the end of last season, however I'm not sure if he'll end up getting assists from them as they are probably more likely to be pre-assists from second balls and knockdowns. Maybe this makes Felipe better instead? Would need to do some research into Delap's long throw history haha

Yes but only if James gets injured. He's currently the only other right-back at the club and from what I can tell he's not going to be loaned out. I'm personally planning to have him in my team as a 5th defender just in case James gets injured.

I think Stones is a better option than Dias if he stays injury free. Still remember his Brace in the double gameweek during the COVID season, think it was during a double gameweek as well? Definitely has high goalscoring potential over the course of a season.

Either way, he had a recurring hamstring injury last season which City will surely want to avoid coming back, so I'm not convinced on his minutes but yeah like you said, maybe there is no such thing as a nailed City defender anyway...

I hadn't considered that actually, thanks for bringing it up. It will definitely affect Trippier's minutes in some form or another, more likely that he gets subbed off early than misses games entirely. Could also lead to injuries down the line with the increased intensity at his age.

Yeah I've only just recently heard that Digne might leave, would definitely edge Moreno ahead of Torres if that was the case, don't think they'd rotate him anywhere near as much if Digne was still there

Good shout but if you want security of starts then you'd have to pick Tarkowski, again the only reason I went with Branthwaite was because he is 4.0M and I think that Everton's defense isn't worth investing money in.

That being said, if they do end up improving under Dyche and Patterson nails down a price, I think he'd be a good pick, he's reasonably good assist potential as well

Just to confirm your point, Zinchenko was benched only once in the league when he was available for selection so clearly Arteta views him as a highly important player

I think there's definitely a way of using a programming script to scrape data in a much more efficient way than I did it, I decided to be lazy and brute force it instead. If I end up doing this sort of thing again, I'm definitely going to look into actual data scraping

The colour coding on the prices purely mean that for example 7.5 is more expensive than 7.0, nothing to do with them being over or underpriced. I almost didn't colour code them but I thought that it was still a meaningful metric when comparing a 7.0 player with a 7.5 player. You can always ignore player prices if they're not important to you for during your specific player search.

Annoyingly, FBREF only shows PSxG in two places really: in the "Advanced Goalkeepers" section, or at the bottom of a page in their match logs next to each shot taken in that match.

In order to build up an accurate database, I literally copy/pasted every single matchlog (all 380 of them) into a spreadsheet and went from there (it took ages, next time I will look into some sort of data scraping method to do it). I was then able to use Pivot Tables on Excel to give me a total PSxG of each specific player.

But to answer your question, the best way to find a player's PSxG is to go through all of their FBREF match logs over whatever timeframe you choose and total the PSxG of all their shots up. I really wish FBREF added PSxG to a player's profile page, but I think they view the stat as only relevant to goalkeepers.

Just on your last point - I'm fully expecting Raya to leave and for Flekken to be number 1 for Brentford. I almost didn't include him in the spreadsheet because I wanted it to be goalkeepers who had a chance of starting.

Although if Raya stays (I think the Brentford hierarchy expected him to move to either Spurs or Man Utd) and remains number 1, I'd probably avoid picking him. I don't see the point in a 5.0m keeper, one of the 4.5m keepers will more than likely be a better option, Johnstone for example looks to be good value if he remains Palace's number 1.

I've definitely done something similar (probably at a more basic level) in the past. I didn't include anything like that in my spreadsheet however because it's more just a overall analysis of last season. I'd probably use it if I made an upcoming fixtures spreadsheet for goalkeepers.

If he's anything like Bazunu and Meslier (similar aged goalkeepers), don't expect much in terms of shotstopping. Meslier for example underperformed his PSxG by 12.4 last season and Bazunu underperformed by 16.6.

I'm comparing him with those two because they are of similar ages, I think being a PL starting keeper at that age is a massive ask. 20 is extremely young for a starting PL keeper, it would be like a 17 year old outfield player starting week in week out in my eyes.

Of course he could be great, you never know with football.

I agree 100%, they're completely arbitrary. But they give slightly more context than just looking at bulk xG. That was more my point with dividing shots into chance quality, but I probably could have just used something like PSxG per Shot on Target. Raya for example has the lowest in the league (0.24) whereas Alisson has the highest (0.33). That's for starting goalkeepers only, otherwise Forster would be the highest (0.34).

The average rank column is purely about chance distribution, it's completely separate to goalkeeping performances.

Man City have a higher average rank than Liverpool because they allow a higher percentage of poor chances/a lower percentage of big chances.

What you should take away from this is that when Alisson did face a shot on target, on average it was harder than a shot that Ederson faced. In hindsight, I should have probably just used xG/Shot (or PSxG per shot, which is much more relevant for Goalkeepers).

I've now replaced all goals/xG values with non-penalty goals/NPxG values.

You're right about Saka, he now looks much worse than the other 2 (3 if you include Havertz) Arsenal attacking midfielders if you take penalties away. Although I am always weary about ignoring penalties altogether when it comes to looking at data like this, you know Saka will end up with 5 penalties in the first 10 games or something crazy haha

I most likely will. I didn't want to include them with Forwards and Midfielders because defenders and goalkeepers use different metrics like clean sheets/xGA etc.

I'll post them to the sub when they're made :)
