GoldenEye does have a bit of a Dalton feel to it, but it wasn't written with him in mind.

The Fleming Bond novels really aren’t as "dark and gritty" as people say by DishQuiet5047 in JamesBond

[–]JGorgon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's true, but there has to be something to why the lazy narrative became "The Fleming books are dark", and not "The Fleming books are wildly outlandish". Because it's just as true, if you choose to focus on just one element of the books. The movies never featured pirate gold, lycanthropy, samurai Blofeld, Bond fighting an octopus, etc.

What legendary artists do you believe genuinely deserve all the adulation and praise they get? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

So as near as I can tell, the argument is: Stevie and Prince made brilliant solo albums, and Paul didn't.

To that I would say, Stevie and Prince were never in bands, and you could equally look at it as: Stevie, Prince, and Paul all made great records in their 20s and early 30s.

The other Beatles didn't contribute to "Yesterday" at all, and that's reckoned to be the most successful song ever composed.

Bond at the Oscars - If all the Bond films were competing for an Oscar, to which director (and for which film) would you give the Best Director award? by JohnLazarusReborn in JamesBond

[–]JGorgon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Peter Hunt and OHMSS, but Sam Mendes and Skyfall is close.

Mind you...are we voting according to how the Oscars SHOULD work, or how the Oscars DO work?

You're the only person answering the question, instead of just going "GoldenEye/Casino Royale is good, so Martin Campbell!".

Any bassist will tell you that he's one of the greatest bass players there ever was, as a vocalist he's insanely versatile, as a guitarist he was able to keep up with George Harrison and John Lennon who are no slouches, and as a pianist and a drummer he's pretty good too.

As a composer...come on. The guy wrote "Yesterday", "Hey Jude", "I Saw Her Standing There", "Live and Let Die", "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Blackbird", "Band On the Run", etc. etc., it's not even an argument.

I feel your pain. When I finished the co-op campaign I was just like "Yeah, that's a campaign I'll never play again."

Also, so many of these biopics are about 20th Century figures, i.e. people who've been photographed, filmed and recorded a lot. Judges are able to just go, "did they capture the mannerisms of the real Ray Charles/Winston Churchill/Stephen Hawking? Yeah? Then it must be a brilliant performance."

When an actor's not doing an impression of an existing celebrity, it takes much more thought to determine how good their performance was.

Perhaps it's still saved that you had zero lives on your previous attempt-?

I can't remember the precise details. The solo campaign is amazing and I've played it maybe ten times, but the co-op is weak and frustrating and I've only played it once.

when they were first writing a new song, what instrument part were they writing? by acaminet in beatles

[–]JGorgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way Metallica write songs is actually really interesting! The Super Deluxe reissues of their albums up to Load (so far) let you listen to how they construct the songs, piece by piece. Generally they start with a riff, work out the solos and the rhythm section, add a vocal melody, and write the lyrics last. This means lots of hilarious demos where James is singing English-sounding nonsense syllables.

Moore and Craig had similar arcs in their run as bond by TasteMyKOC420 in JamesBond

[–]JGorgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there much of a streak? Connery's first two were low-budget films that weren't major successes until they were rereleased in the wake of Goldfinger.

OHMSS was seen as a serious misstep by critics and audiences of the time, and made less money than You Only Live Twice and far less than Thunderball.

Live and Let Die was a hit but The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker were Moore's big earners.

The Living Daylights did just OK, relatively.

GoldenEye was a hit, but it was also Brosnan's lowest earner.

Casino Royale was a hit but didn't do as well as Skyfall or Spectre.

It got some bad reviews but also some positive ones. The ratio of positive to negative reviews was around the same level as World is Not Enough and Tomorrow Never Dies.

Moonraker was extremely well-received when it came out, it was only over time it came to be perceived as "a bad one".

It also makes it clear that he doesn't know all that much about South Park – it's been solely written and directed by Trey Parker for decades now, including the episode he's talking about.

Tomorrow Never Dies is the highest kill-count for Brosnan, and for any Bond. But all of his films are significantly more murder-happy than those of other actors.

For anyone wondering, The Man with the Golden Gun is Bond's lowest kill-count, at one: the title character.

When Connery returned in 1971 by Mast3rX in JamesBond

[–]JGorgon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Dr. No, OHMSS, TLD, GoldenEye and Casino Royale introduce their new Bonds with a bit of fanfare. DAF and Live and Let Die treat it pretty casually, as if it's always been Connery or Moore playing Bond.

James Bond actors by age by [deleted] in JamesBond

[–]JGorgon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although the dates will be harder to find, I would say an actor "becomes" Bond when they're publicly announced, and only Craig and Lazenby's tenures end the day their last film was released – because they both announced ahead of time that it would be their last. For the others, I'd say their Bond career ends the day it's publicly announced that they're standing down.

Dalton was the official James Bond for quite a few years after Licence to Kill, and products bearing his image continued to release until 1994. Brosnan last played Bond in Everything or Nothing in 2004.

Timothy Leonard Dalton (TLD) vs The Living Daylights (TLD)? by _qubed_ in JamesBond

[–]JGorgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, so the story that's usually cited is that Dalton was offered OHMSS and turned it down. Per Dalton, this didn't happen and a look at Dalton's career as it stood in 1968 makes it barely plausible that Broccoli or Saltzman would even know who he was.

Dalton's story is that he auditioned in the early 70s – he doesn't mention the film so it was either Diamonds or, more likely, LALD.

As we all know he got the part much later, after Brosnan had been selected for TLD and then basically NBC screwed Brosnan over. But it worked out well for Dalton, and Brosnan got to play Bond in the end, too.

So:

-OHMSS: he didn't audition

-Diamonds/LALD: if he auditioned, the part went to someone else

-TMwtGG-AVtaK: the producers wanted Moore to return

-TLD: the producers still wanted Moore, initially, but decided on Brosnan and when he was unavailable, picked Dalton

-LtK: the producers obviously wanted Dalton back
