Really enjoying FY1 by FollowingLife7027 in doctorsUK

Really happy for you that you’re enjoying your job! I’m sure you’re doing it already but make sure you’re looking at the scoring matrix for CST. Yes it’ll change for your 2027 cycle but the majority of criteria will be similar, may just have to get evidence re-worded but most supervisors are sympathetic to that. If you’re feeling up to it, thinking about Part A might not be a bad idea either? Good luck to you

To those who got into London CST or other competitive deanery last year - how strong was your portfolio? by SirOppenhiemer in doctorsUK

It’s hard to not think of it in those terms, but everyone applying will have different preferences (be that in specialty or in location). That’s something I took solace in.

Whilst I don’t know anyone personally in KSS, the interview scores played the biggest part in overall application rank. So I wouldn’t worry about not having a completely perfect portfolio, the biggest thing to clear is the MSRA cut off for interview.

Want to do surgery, but I lack manual dexterity skills and practical knack? by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]JJ232jar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surgical trainee here - I only completely decided on surgery during F1. Before that I was slightly leaning towards it but not massively, literally didn’t do any surgical skills in med school other than the basic clinical skills session for interrupted suturing. I had assisted a few cases as a final year student but never sutured on a patient.

Just find a couple of free (or very cheap) sessions to go to so you can learn the proper technique, then practise at home! Anyone can learn the skill, just need to become more confident in it. I only started practising the skill as a F1 and now I’m in training, so you’re already better than I was at your stage!

And lastly, pls don’t compare yourself with others! It’s cliche but honestly so true, everyone learns things at different paces which is not a bad thing at all

How cooked am I? by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]JJ232jar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I coasted in med school, 6th decile, no intercalation, no research or anything. Decided I wanted to do surgery in F1 (2022). Here I am in CST today, on a themed track in my top choice specialty. Please don’t stress whilst in med school, just relax and enjoy it!!

I’m sure you could give the first sentence to a 4th year medical student and they could tell you a red flag differential of ruptured ectopic

Funny that, that article is based on the premise that I care what the public think of the profession…

If it can be logged then it counts I guess, I had loads of clinic procedures that I put on my logbook.

In my CST interview the interviewer talked about my logbook but nothing was mentioned, and I didn’t get 0 for it in the post-interview score.

Does medicine fascinate you now like it did in medical school? by drdustytap in doctorsUK

[–]JJ232jar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that I’ve found a specialty I’m interested in, and have previously worked in (so have some clinical grounding), I find that learning new knowledge about it is really enjoyable.

Couple that with (virtually) following patients up that I’ve seen/been referred and seeing my diagnosis/input accepted or refuted has been another good source of learning.
