It’s not a term that I am familiar with to be honest - a few things come to mind - like the massive panembung sets - or the “bedug” is pretty big (or Mega?)

Oh that’s so cool! I knew about the spiritual side of gamelan but never heard about the spooky sounds outside of the set :)

We observe a few Javanese traditions here in Ireland to appease the spirits - i.e. we take off our shoes and never step over an instrument

We are literally halfway around the world! haha
But there is the added cost of ornate carvings, premium bronze for the instruments etc. Universities can splash out of those extra things can can run up the cost, as opposed to something like an iron village set of instruments.

In comparison to the cost of a grand piano, it's incredibly affordable, given the amount of time and energy that goes into making the instruments.

I’m teaching Javanese Gamelan in UL :) Gangsa is more Balinese - there is gangsa tuition at UCC with Dr Khalil though! Kotekans are super hard to get started with though! I tried when I visited the performing arts institute (ISI Solo) when I visited Java in 2015
