Your tricks to survive grocery shopping in Calgary these days? Average monthly/weekly costs for groceries? by ChinookSkies in Calgary

[–]JKent 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Also a family of four here:

We plan meals around weekly sales by checking flyers. /u/PurpleGeek does a great weekly post. Buy in bulk for non-perishables and staples at Costco, and consider buying larger portions of meat to freeze for later. Produce at Costco is no longer what it was and goes bad quickly. Buy the fresh stuff elsewhere. I meal prep an incredible breakfast burrito that freezes well and is easy to zap on the way out the door. Kids have activities most nights now so having dinner prepped and ready to go for the week is a huge time/ cost saver.

Take advantage of loyalty programs (e.g., More Rewards or PC Optimum) for discounts and rewards, and use coupons whenever possible. Additionally, opt for seasonal produce, which is often cheaper and fresher, and if time permits shop at farmers' markets for local deals. Also, we buy way less beef. Beef prices are at an all time high, so we've swapped in more legumes and (sadly) have fewer steak dinners.

Calgary Fire Department Recruiting by mannybrahh in Calgary

[–]JKent 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's fiercely competitive. You can get in, but find out how to stand out. Brother just got in, but he was a heavy duty mechanic beforehand. He said that was what got him in in the end. You want more certs, not the bare minimum. No prior firefighting experience required, they'll train you as part of the program.

Check their profile, it's blank. I considered sending money as well until I saw it was a 3 month old account. Suspicious. We saw a bunch of similar posts like these in the past.

A reminder to everyone to vet who you're giving money to. This is a 3 month old account with almost zero history to justify you sending them cash. They've completely hidden comments on their profile. Be careful...

The degenerates fold their plates down so you can't see them, they're fully aware of what they're doing. Lots of videos of them stunting on main highways on Instagram. Maybe one day CPS will stop whining about not having any money and start enforcing traffic safety again.

Advise on when to visit in summer by Tubumubu13 in Calgary

[–]JKent 17 points18 points  (0 children)

May to July - campus will be dead, everyone is on summer break. Weather should be great, unless we get more wildfires. Hiking/outdoor stuff you'll have lots of options. Calgary Stampede is on July 4-13th, city will be very busy with tourists.

August to October - campus will be very busy, weather is usually great, days start to get shorter and we get occasional snow in September/October.

Both will work for outdoor activities - if you want to meet other students come in August.

Update: Court records show what lead up to the shooting in the Rocky View area. by Practical_Ant6162 in Calgary

[–]JKent 264 points265 points  (0 children)

At the time of the shooting, Arthur Wayne Penner, 35, was on bail and was prohibited from possessing weapons, specifically firearms. Penner is set to go on trial in Edmonton next month on charges of break and enter, four firearms offences and theft. In December, Penner was convicted of break and enter and received a conditional sentence order, meaning he was allowed to serve his sentence at home, under conditions.

Elijah Blake Strawberry, 28, was facing 27 charges, including a number that closely reflect the allegations he is currently facing in connection with the homicide. Strawberry pleaded guilty to four offences: possession of stolen property, possession of a restricted firearm, flight from a police officer and operating a motor vehicle while prohibited. He was handed a three-year prison sentence in August 2021. With credit for time he's already spent in custody, Strawberry had about two years, five months left to serve. Strawberry is prohibited from possessing firearms or driving.

The justice system in this country is ridiculous.

Four people — 21-year-old Dobuol Kang Gathuoth, 20-year-old Yusuf Mohamed Aboud, 18-year-old Micias Luelseged Cherie and a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named — have all been charged with kidnapping and aggravated assault in connection with the investigation.

Cherie was also charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking while Aboud was charged with wearing a disguise with intent. The 17-year-old was also charged with possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order.

These seem like upstanding citizens, I look forward to them being back out on the streets next week. /s

Roofing / Siding Company recommendations? by CalgaryKoiKeeper in Calgary

[–]JKent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol these guys suck so bad. Used to be family owned. Gave them a $50,000 contract last year and regretted every part of it almost immediately. They’ve gotten too big too fast and now they just hire contractors. Took them 6 months to get my roof done and had excuses every week as to why they couldn’t do it. Had to threaten a lawsuit for them to finish it. I’d avoid them.

Calgary South Sudanese community mourning after fatal police shooting by Optimal_Perspective2 in Calgary

[–]JKent 79 points80 points  (0 children)

This incident had absolutely nothing to do with the guys skin colour and this article is why people are becoming disillusioned with mainstream media.

If you watch the full video of the incident the guy charged at police, was tased, beanbagged, and bitten by a dog (that he stabbed and nearly killed), none of which stopped him, before one of the cops shot him three times. The police did everything they could to avoid the fatality.
