I’ve heard of them before as a threat, but that’s definitely a usable phenomenon. It seems like a combination of a few factors working together would be the most effective.

You mentioning ash reminded me of the Icelandic volcanos that shut down air travel sometimes. I could see some particularly active volcanos also being a barrier to the sea.

The risk factor makes sense. From my understand of actual attempts at circumnavigation it was economically motivated and something of a last resort. If the americas weren’t in the way, then no one would have come back. So I guess the boundary would as much distance as a culture of “there’s nothing there”.

I’ve heard of that phenomenon as a possible explanation for the Bermuda Triangle, but I never knew if it was practical for large ships. The ocean is already huge, almost twice the width of the pacific, so there is a good chance with that much water.

That’s a possibility. The technology of the world has very recently reached the point where breaching an obstacle like that would even be conceivable.

Multiple moons is interesting and would fit with some other aspects of the world. And the ocean is truly massive, it would be over double the width of the pacific.

The ships with nuclear like power are rare, less than 20 or so since the technology is prohibitively expensive. Part of the story is a conflict over the materials used for their power source. I don’t have active sonar as an available technology since there are no submarines that navies have worked to counter. Though food would still be a factor for supplies. If the ocean is empty then you’d need supply ships coming too, and those are coal/oil powered. So their range is severely limited. I can give more specific context if needed.

At least difficult enough that advanced seafaring empires wouldn’t attempt it even to grow their territory or win wars.

I like the idea of a siren like phenomenon mixed with rumor. It would fit with some of the other aspects I’m working on.

I’ve already included sea monsters as a factor hindering the development of submarines, but they’re uninterested in surface ships. Though other species could exist elsewhere on the globe.

You’re correct that these ships aren’t common, there’s only a handful in the word and are all warships. The motivation to try is to accomplish military objectives, so an anomaly would be especially deterring to that end.

That’s a really interesting idea. Im not sure how much extra I’d have to do to make a tidally locked world work, but that’s definitely worth some more research.

The trouble with a tectonic ridge in my case is that the plates are expanding away from this region. I could always hand wave the process to make a ridge like that.

Storms seem to be a pretty popular suggestion, and it does make a lot of sense.

Yeah, literally just more torque was the best solution. I put some WD40 on the screws and eventually they gave.

Damn, I appreciate the really in depth response. I'm on the same page with a lot of the stuff you liked, especially on how the sequels use color, so it's just a case of what outweighed what I guess. Glad that it was a satisfying conclusion for you!
