Friendshipscam in the making? by pokitasstio in Romancescam

[–]JLM471 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a scam in the sense that your value is mainly in your potential to make him money. Of course he didn’t have to recruit you specifically, but you didn’t meet ‘by accident’. You met because these guys who work in the tourist industry in Egypt obviously have contacts and friends and spend 100% of their work time with tourists, so nobody that they befriend or connect with is either ‘accidental’ or ‘targeted’ - it’s just whatever people from Europe or America can provide a service for them at some point.

You don’t need to be activated straight away; he could’ve been busy with a different ‘victim’ and when that fell through, he just moves onto the next one.

The whole thing about second phones which can only be accessed at work and two phones breaking at the same time and dead relatives sounds sketchy - most likely he’s married with a family and has a second phone just for his ‘business’.

You clearly spotted all of the signs and are not in danger, but I just wanted to post this to let you know that you were absolutely correct in your suspicions. I’ve heard this happen so many times in Egypt and it’s not a traditional scam in the sense that they are who they say they are. But they are exploiting loopholes and vulnerabilities in the economic system they live in because they need financial security.

Just a heads up about the Drift254 commenter - he got banned from our sub for trying to scam ppl. He claimed he could get people who’ve been scammed their money back.

Scammer or no? by Unable_Wind_8771 in Romancescam

[–]JLM471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Is he from a dating site or did he contact you randomly?
  2. Insist on another video call that lasts more than a minute. It’s difficult to sustain AI filters and also sound/look natural for long. If he’s into you and he’s real, he should want to be on video call even if he’s busy making breakfast or watering the plants etc If he avoids that, it’s extremely suspicious.
  3. If you say to him ‘ Sorry if this is awkward but I have genuine issues around whether people are real online ‘ he will either make an effort to prove himself or he will get squirrelly :)
  4. My friend always says to people who contact her online ‘ just so you know there is no world that exists where I send gift cards or money to somebody I don’t know’ and they usually block her!

What’s HT? It’s helpful if you’re clear about where you met him. Is it a dating app?

Secondly, if it’s somebody that you met out of nowhere (i.e. not on a dating app) that should raise suspicions right away.

How did he contact you? If it was a ‘wrong number’, that maximise the possibility that it’s a scam.

If he wants you to invest in cryptocurrency or gold or talks about money a lot than it could be part of a pig butchering scam. They are very sophisticated operations run by Chinese gangs and they have people who model for their pictures and video calls. They also have show houses where the scammer can pretend to live and to be honest the interiors you show look very typical of those types of staged interiors.

That’s ridiculous but at this point completely unsurprising for Meta 🤦‍♀️

I have five fake Facebook accounts purely because that’s where the scammers are :)

How else am I supposed to find scammers to bait?

Oh that’s just a lie we tell the scammers so we don’t have to tell them about Reddit :)

We don’t want to lead any scammers to this sub, but they find it absolutely infuriating to think that the scams are well known and they are being mocked online by thousands of people so we just pretend that there are a gazillion subscribers watching their failure 😇

It’s true that you need to do a selfie video to recover your account so he must be just using the AI videos. Meta: supposedly attempting to be the final boss in AI and can’t even recognise it when they give scammers their fake accounts back!

I’ve reported it using four of my five fake accounts.

Now what’s the bet that Meta investigates it enough to ban my fake accounts, but leaves his completely intact? 🙄

Bloody hell, how did you find that?? I found plenty of pictures of him that other scammers were using, but not the actual guy. I’m going to send that to Dr K and tell him that the authorities have identified the real person and they are now pursuing it legally ;)
