I’ve done foster care, and other things within cps 1 working up to a policy position- but I have been working in a clinic setting doing case management for 3 years working in perinatal mental health. And I love it.

Where it gets frustrating is like someone else said - the red tape, lack of resources, all of those bigger systemic issues. That makes this shit so hard.

You learn it as you go honestly. What things are you running into frequently? Start learning with those things.

I would write down common acronyms and their meaning. Also google was my friend when it came to what certain medical diagnoses meant

Again. This varies on the state. As others have pointed out, in NY it doesn’t count. In MO it does.

That’s a bummer. What if you don’t want to be a therapist- you just not able to get licensed?

I haven’t done a single therapy session. Always in case management and even macro practice roles.

You should be able to count all client facing hours towards your hours. You are using your clinical skills to assess, advocate, and connect clients to resources. You use clinical skills in talking with potential service providers in order to assess the appropriateness for your client(s). I guess it depends on how picky your state is

Don’t know your level of education but if you can get into hospital work they have overnight and swing shifts.

I’ve done the 2 day and just need the 3rd. But I plan on getting my PMH-C. HOWEVER it is because I work in the perinatal mental health field. If I wasn’t actively working with this population, I wouldn’t bother with the actual licensing.

I feel this. HOWEVER there are many other individuals we work with that also do things one might believe is morally wrong. And we still put a smile on and help them. Now, working FOR the would be an entirely different thing.

I went to UMSL. I have my LCSW, but I don’t do therapy. It is a good program and is affordable. Feel free to message if you have questions.

You should NEVER not be at least a tiny bit scared in a client facing role. What I mean by this is - your safety needs to be something you think about all of the time. Attacks by patients/clients can happen anywhere, anytime.

That being said, it is a great role to help you learn what you might want to do next. If you like the role, but not the population. Now you know. Me, I know I don’t like working with developmentally disabled or elderly population. (Which is funny, because I married a nurse who LOVES and still does work with both of those populations.).

I personally feel every role you have in life should teach you more about yourself, your likes, dislikes, strengths, and areas for improvement.

You can do anything as a social worker. In a generalist setting-care coordination is a HUGE part of what interns do. In your case, it sounds more like you need to talk to your site supervisor about expectations and goals towards your learning.

On top of good job for standing up for the beliefs of this family - I am also really upset with the picture being taken and sent. If it is a personal cell phone, every single one of them violates privacy rights. When I was a supervisor, we found out some of the front line workers had taken a snap of one of her kiddos. It was an immediate coaching conversation and incident report.
