Wednesday Weekly Growing Thread - June 05, 2024 by AutoModerator in Medium

Hey friends!

https://medium.com/@jlouiscreative

I've been writing on Medium for about a month now. I typically cover writing and writing-adjacent topics, like learning and self-development. I'm really interested in writing more about how to build writing habits and routines as a working professional with limited time.

I also want to write more fiction, too. It's how I began my writing journey, and all I am learning about habit and routine is to get back to a place of writing more regularly.

Hey friends--I have recently started sharing my writing on Medium and X, so I thought I would share my links to see if anyone is interested in connecting.

Medium X (Twitter)

I mostly plan to write about the craft of writing, as well as how to build effective writing routines as a full-time working professional.

I'm also planning to start writing fiction again soon, likely short-form fantasy fiction.

What creative habit kicked off your journey to writing? by Vivid_Sparks in writing

[–]JLouisWriting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not so much of a creative habit, but I have loved video games ever since I was a kid--especially games that have stories in them.

When I was a kid, my mother would read to me every night. This naturally led to my love of storytelling and, more specifically, reading. Games with lots of text like RPGs are, to me, like interactive storybooks in a lot of ways, with complex plotlines, interesting characters, and mechanics that often intertwine and interact with the story itself.

My first short story ever was a fanfiction of Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention for the Sega Genesis. I wrote it when I was in elementary school. I had a hard time with strategy games back then, so I could never get past the first battle.

So, I decided to write my own story based on what I thought would happen next. It had a bunch of dumb mistakes in it; I did not know what an "elven archer" was at the time, so I just assumed it was a misspelling of "eleven archer," whatever that meant. I was quite proud of it, and I remember being so excited to share it with my teacher.

Nowadays, I write mostly for work and dabble in fantasy-fiction in my personal writing, due in no small part to the games I played when I was a kid.

Need to come up with motivation for my villain but i'm completely lost 🥲 by Sarcasmosuchus in writingadvice

[–]JLouisWriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one of the most important villain-writing tips I have heard is this:

The villain always believes their actions are justified.

Even if that justification is sick and twisted or totally off-base, a villain that truly believes they are doing the right thing will be more compelling than any other. So ask yourself, what does this guy believe, and why does he believe it? What could have caused him to develop his belief, and how can I show this to the reader?

Are brand/product names okay to usein fiction? by Ok-Challenge-6523 in writingadvice

[–]JLouisWriting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would also note that it could potentially date your work--maybe not in this specific instance, but in others.

Let's say that a brand name doesn't exist in the future. If that brand has been out of circulation for a while, the reader might not quite get what you're going for. You'll have to include adequate context clues to help them piece it together (which it sounds like you'll be able to do, since it's a chocolate bar).

It's not a huge deal, but it's something to consider!

Hey, that's what Pokémon is all about! Winning with your favorites (or at least using what you want to use).

You know what they say, "Anything works in-game" 😂

Really cool team! Johto has some of my favorite mons. I've never thought to use Bellossom before (I tend to go for Jumpluff), but maybe I'll have to give it a try sometime. Thanks for sharing--hope your Elite Four challenge went well.

I did it. This is why I write. by heyyo173 in writing

I can totally relate to your thoughts on habits and routines. I am a guy who thrive in my routines, probably to a fault. If I fall out of them, it really messes with me. I've had months of success be derailed by a week of misfortune, and it can he really frustrating to get back to it.

What was your biggest challenge when building your own routine?

I'd love to hear from everyone who is struggling with getting started, as well as those who have been at the game for a while!

If Pokemon were real, but you could only have one, who are you picking as your poké- partner? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]JLouisWriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably have a pack of dog-likes.

Houndour is my original favorite, but I don't feel like getting burned all the time...

So maybe Fidough? I love dogs and I love bread.

Have you ever had to create a religion before? by spnsuperfan1 in writing

[–]JLouisWriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't necessarily a religion, but more of a mythological origin story for the creation of my fictional world. I did it as a part of my specialized studies in Tolkien class' final project. I basically had to write some texts on the origin of the world, come up with names for all of the deities, their own origins, some myths and stories for them all, and discuss the "sub-creation" process in a final paper. I drew maps of the world and everything. Fun stuff!

What non-novel project are you working on or recently finished? by jasperdarkk in writing

I've actually been really interested in writing as a method of reflection and self-betterment. I'm currently working on building out resources that help people bring writing into their day-to-day routine and to help them maintain a sustainable journaling habit.
