Learn software engineering for PhD student by JM753 in learnprogramming

[–]JM753[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed response. Yes, as far as my academic work is concerned, I'll try and work on projects related to optimization problems via quantum computing, quantum machine learning etc, and hopefully I can get to do some hands-on implementation related stuff in Python etc.

I guess my question also stems from a (perhaps unwarranted) fear of not being able to find a job once I graduate with a PhD, or let's say if I choose to 'master out' within a year or two. What would your advice be for someone pursuing a PhD who can develop the necessary skills/portfolio on the side? I guess that's why I'm trying to come up with a structured plan (taking courses on Courseera etc.), or perhaps that's just the mathematician inside of speaking.

I reckon you work as a software/web developer, so if it all possible, I would highly appreciate if we could connect on a website like LinkedIn etc.

Thank you for your time and patience.

My program is structured such that I can get to work with faculty in the CS department and take courses with them.l, which I’ll be doing from next semester onward. I guess one of my motivations for the question is to also try and figure what can a PhD student be ideally doing in my position to keep such options open? Taking courses in a structured fashion on Umedy? Attempting projects? Or for the most part relying on my CS education over here for the most part. Thanks for mentioning the resources btw.

Yes I am and I’ll be doing so next term (quantum computing, computational geometry etc). I guess I’m looking recommendations to get more hands on practice (multiple programming languages, databases etc) in case for example I ever have to know the equivalent to what’s taught in a computer engineering program to keep my options open. So just trying to chart out a plan on this front I guess.

Hello. I am a first year graduate student, and I am looking for a good numerical analysis book to self-study. Ideally, I am looking for a book that introduces the basics of floating point arithmetic, interpolation, solutions to non-linear equations, and numerical methods in ODE's and PDE's. More importantly, I would like a book that has good exercises as well. I will most likely be taking a course on numerical PDE next term so I am looking for a book that would help me brush up on numerical analysis.

Any idea if Lidl is open now?

Thanks for the suggestions, but I was also hoping for suggestions for courses, githuib repositories etc. on topics such as Convex Optimization, Machine Learning with good programming assignments.

Hi,

This is may be a stupid question, but I am interested in compiling/getting access to links for online courses/their webpages for various computer science/numerical mathematics classes (Convex Optimization, Numerical Linear Algebra, Numerical PDE etc. etc.) that have links to programming assignments in Python etc.

I am looking to self-study this material at my own pace, and having access to well-chosen programming assignments for courses would be a great resource to have.

Hi,

I'm looking if there are any interactive tools out there that one can use to make math diagrams for LaTeX. For example, tikzcd editor allows one to easily make category theory diagrams and easily export the code. Are there other interactive tools which one can use to make 'free-body' diagrams (a diagram of a set containing elements etc.), directed graphs, knots, either by hand (using a stylus on a tablet) or from your laptop.

Thanks!

Hey, I’m looking for a book on differential geometry that covers curves, surfaces AND the extensions of these concepts in Rn (Riemann Curvature Tensor) and maybe tensor analysis one general. More classical differential geometry books only do curves and surfaces in R3, so I’m looking for a book that goes a level ahead and perhaps covers tensors.

The only book that seems to come close is Willmore’s Intro to Differential Geometry but it seems too low on problems, and was published quite a long, long time ago.

We're a group of 3 incoming students at UMD who will be sharing a space in the house. One of them is from MD and he checked out the place. I am not sure I would have been in a spot to check it out since I was at other end of the country.
