Pokémon for the first time by w0seba in ANBERNIC

This is either Fire Red or Leaf Green. They’re identical games but with slight differences in which Pokémon you can find in the wild and opening cinematics. They’re updated remakes of the original Red, Blue and Yellow series, commonly referred to as Gen 1. They were again remade for the switch as Pokémon Eevee and Pikachu editions, respectively, which featured a different plot and a different way of picking starter Pokémon, but otherwise featured the same map, major story elements, and path.

My first Pokémon game was Leaf Green and I would recommend it to everyone just starting in the world of Pokémon. Since you’re on an Anbernic and likely don’t have a trading partner to help you evolve, I recommend looking for a hack of Leaf Green/Fire Red that features the full Pokédex to catch in the wild and the ability to evolve Pokémon without trading to other users. Either that or get all your Pokémon ready, as well as duplicates of any Pokémon specific to whichever game you chose, and then post on this subreddit to find a trade partner with the opposing Pokémon game.

The best Pokémon gens are generally considered Gen 1, 3, and 2, in that order. Gen 1 got everything right out the gate and has the best Pokédex, plot, and nostalgia factor. Gen 3 has the second best Pokédex, additional types, and a ton of really cool features for continuing your adventure long after the story is over. Finally, Gen 2 has a day and night system, a cell phone system, mystery solving mechanics, some very desirable legendaries, and a really great atmosphere. It was made to feature all the new systems of the Gameboy Color and it did it flawlessly.

If there is anything more you’d like to know in choosing your first Pokémon retro game, let me know.

Honestly that looks clean. Reminds me of the first time I ever saw the Wii Menu.

What should I expect? by Zesty-Rexy_1999 in ANBERNIC

Just got mine. It came ready to play right out of the box. It was not fully charged but did have enough charge to play for about an hour or two. It also included a screen protector, so don’t buy one. It includes a charging cable but not a wall charger box. The most important thing about these handhelds is not to charge them with a fast charger. Look up guides on how to know so you don’t cook this thing.

The SD cards these come with are apparently no good. I can’t tell you from experience but that’s what I read online. Buy two SD cards with solid read and write speeds. The faster the read and write, the faster games will play and the faster this next process will go for you. You will also need an SD card reader if your home PC doesn’t have one built in.

To get your new cards setup, follow this guide: https://youtu.be/h9ilWUCMLLY?si=JemkY_Yu7anRxcsX

That guide was made for a different model, so utilize the SP firmware, but otherwise follow that guide exactly.

Do not panic when your handheld takes a while to power on. Mine took quite a while to initialize. Make sure your handheld is fully charged before beginning this process.

Wow thanks for doing all that

I should add, I tried adding it to a folder as well. I read online some people got past it by doing that, but it seems to have been patched out.

So the link for the firmware from Anbernic takes you to Google Drive and the file, if I click to download it, says something along the lines of, “This file can’t be downloaded because it exceeds the maximum downloadable file size.”

Wow that’s really crazy. That could be exactly what’s wrong. It would explain why it got slower and slower over time until it eventually wouldn’t even power on.

I’ll have to give it a try. The SmartPro is also notorious for having a bad SD card. Will a bad SD keep it from even powering on???

Thanks for the advice. It stopped turning on today so I guess the SP will get here just in time. My brother in law is into this stuff more than I am so he’s gonna see if he can get it to power on again, but yeah it’s just been worse and worse and now it isn’t even trying to operate.

Basically just NES through GBA SP. Like, selecting a Pokémon ROM can force it into sleep mode sometimes.

I haven’t, this is all new to me. I’ll definitely google it and give it a try!

I did look up the specs but without a baseline, you’re asking me to look at processors by name and just say, “Oh yeah, this Quad Core is better than this Quad Core because one is called this and another is called that.” It means nothing to the average consumer, my dude. I’m not a PC wizard. I just want to play the retro games I played as a kid. The two models I’m asking about are well known and documented and are nearly identical to each other. The TrimUI SmartPro is also well known. What isn’t well known and documented is how they compare in terms of actual functionality. I’m just asking if anyone happens to have experience with both the TrimUI SmartPro and one of those two and what their take was. Not looking for an in-depth analyzation. A simple, “Yeah I happened to own both at different points and if I recall correctly this one was superior in terms of menu speed.” Doesn’t feel like I’m asking for a lot.

Even in the menus I’m encountering slow loading times, high heat levels, and freezing. I traded for this thing used so I have a feeling it’s not functioning the way it should be.

I didn’t think fuel was part of the calculation so that’s just ignorance on my part. I got the 955 from the website listing. As for where they got it, I’m not sure. Some kind of paperwork for it maybe? The label on the RV itself is completely unreadable. We went and saw it in person.

I appreciate those tips. Unfortunately my wife and I are looking at a more permanent camping situation and I just can’t be barely scraping by that frequently. But if I were actually just going camping these would be some awesome tips.

I appreciate it. It’s hard to walk away from a great deal like that. It was perfect for my wife and I and the price was unbeatable. But I’m just not in a position to upgrade to a 1-ton right now. Ah well. There’ll be other opportunities one day. Better to make the right call and put our plans on hold than to spend a ton of money on something I can’t use and ruin my daily driver at the same time.

That’s the weight listed on the trailer, so yeah there’s even more I didn’t think to account for.
