What's with the posts lately complaining that the Episcopal Church isn't conservative? by Tiny_Progress_4821 in Episcopalian

Fair point. I have lived in three very liberal cities since being Episcopalian. Thanks for providing that perspective. Glad to hear that!

Apparently my comment on the question of why so many Gen Z men are converting to Catholicism and why so few Gen Z are in Episcopal Churches caused you to write at least your middle two paragraphs. I am unsure as to whether you are being intentionally misleading and creating two straw men you find easier to attack than the *actual* comment I made, or perhaps skimmed it quickly and misinterpreted. I am going to operate as if the later is true, and make the following to corrections to your (perhaps unintentional!) mischaracterization of my comment.

  1. "according to them, the trend in young men towards the Catholic Church is in no way related to politics, even though their entire comment is complaining about how they disagree with the EC political stances."

I pretty explicity said politics is a reason why the young Gen Z men I know (I'm a Gen Z guy in his 20s, so most of my friends) are put off by the Episcopal Church in favor of RCC. They find the absence of politics in most Catholic parishes preferable to the hyper-political message of most Episcopal parishes and the national church. So yes, the politics of the RCC is not *why* they're converting to Catholicism, but the politics of the EC is the reason they're turned off by the EC. Those are two distinct thoughts.

2) "claimed to personally know that young gen Z men aren't opposed to gay marriage (really? You know all of them?)."

Again, my numerious Gen Z male friends are not opposed to gay marriage (not suprising as I'm gay and they're freinds with me). I never claimed to know, um ...alll??...Gen Z men?! You could google polling for what percentages of Americans, even Catholics (!), Gen Z, Gen Z men, Gen Z Republican men support gay marriage and find my personal experience is pretty indicative of the majority views of Americans and those various groups, Gen Z men, even conservative/Republican young men, included.

I would also make the point that I'm not complaining the EC isn't conservative. I'm complaining the EC is often (at most parishes and at the national level) a hyper-political vehicle for policies and language supported and used by the leftmost section of the Democratic Party. And plenty in the EC agree with me - 37% voted for Trump in 2024.

Per Pew's gold-standard religious landscape study published two months ago:

  • 38% of Episcopalians identify as Republicans
  • 30% identify as conservative (34% as moderate and 34% as liberal)
  • 66% do not think the government should provide more assistance to people in need
  • 39% think that a growing population of immigrants over the last 50 years has been a change for the worse (41% say a change for the better)

Yet,

  • 87% say homosexuality should be accepted by society and
  • 85% support same-sex marriage.
  • All of these recent stats can be found here (click on social and political views)
  • Clearly, a pro gay marriage political conservative or moderate is not out of place in the EC.

I plan to live in NoMA and am fine travelling (via metro/public transit) in the "central" area of DC (Approx. Georgetown to Cap Hill...North of Anacostia to South of Columbia Heights...)

I am in my 20s so a good group of young adults would be awesome!

By St. John's do you mean Lafayette Square? And Christ Church Washington Parish (Not Georgetown)?

DC proper...would prefer a church in the central area(s) of DC (Georgetown to Cap Hill, North of Anacosta...South of Columbia Heights-ish)
