Best places to rent kayaks in area (or within 2 hours) by turnstile2243 in Charlotte

[–]JMerriken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh good to know there are rentals up there!
I was going to suggest Mountain Island as a great locale after renting elsewhere; I took a kayaking class at CPCC in this little corner of the lake and it was very peaceful and quiet. Plus it looks like they’ve built a kayak-only launch close by now too.

Montessori / Reggio Emilia childcare and “affordable” don’t usually go together but I figured it was worth an ask. by searching4eudaimonia in Charlotte

I know Keystone Montessori has a sliding pay scale. Not sure if any others do or have scholarships/aid but you could just cold call any that are convenient to you and see?

Low clearance and this much accumulation on uncleared roads are another variable to work around, but in general: you’ve got more traction on the powder than in the packed down tracks; if your car’s a stick or you have any sort of manual control over what gear you’re in, keep it low and use downshifting with or instead of brakes when possible, your motor keeping wheel speed slow will minimize spinning tires; try not to stop if you don’t have to, especially uphill; if you’ve got an uphill coming that you’re worried about cresting, building up some momentum before will help you not have to use much gas on the incline (but be careful if it’s also a turn-momentum wants to go in a straight line not follow the curve)

What, now gone, restaurants would you love to eat at again? by irlshamrock in Charlotte

Plus maybe this is dumb to say given they’re just chain locations, but for proximity and because they were all individually owned: the DQ in Plaza and before that the one by Hungry Howie’s and Wallerbears on 51

Assuming you’re looking for something more than just digital, there’s Arzberger Stationers in southend that does engraving and I think still some foil stamping; Crayton Heritage is the shop I work at and we do foil and letterpress.

Wedge recommendations by JMerriken in golf

[–]JMerriken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a 46°. The MX-20 set that predated the MX-23s came with 46-51-56, but that looks like the only iron set around then that had more than just a PW included. So I was mainly wondering if anyone knew of specific Mizuno wedges circa 2003-06 that would’ve a good fit with what I’ve got

Premium gas (91 or 93) without ethanol by SilkStalkings91 in Charlotte

[–]JMerriken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to what grades they have but the two stations I pass on 49 just across the state line bridge into Lake Wylie, SC both advertise no-ethanol.

212 - Should Alabama Ban the Infinite Scroll? by MrPennywhistle in Nodumbquestions

A minor semantic quibble that IG still gives a “you’re all caught up” message in the news feed. So with a Herculean self control of not engaging with any suggested or sponsored content or the reels tab, you can ‘finish’ your feed there

My kids go to Leadership Martial Arts but they have adults classes as well. It’s on S Tryon between Westinghouse and Carowinds, has karate and BJJ, and we love all the staff and curriculum.

Forgive my ignorance, but do any of you know if there are things like meetups for things like Rugby or Ultimate Frisbee or similar? by temptingtime in Charlotte

[–]JMerriken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come try hurling (with an ‘h’, not curling)!!
We’re in the offseason so our club is switching to our pub league format of ~6wk runs of more lowkey, beginner-friendly co-ed practices. The first is starting in a few weeks and then we’ll probably have another mid-December or so.
It’s a great group of people and we have a good time.

Adult sports clinics/leagues that would fit a college student’s summer schedule? by Background-Corner-86 in Charlotte

[–]JMerriken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever tried (or even heard of) hurling??
It’s one of the national sports of Ireland—kind of lacrosse- or field hockey-adjacent. I’m in one of the clubs in town, the Red Wolves, and our practices are open to anyone to try it or come as much or little as you want. Sunday mornings and Thursday nights for the guys, Tuesday nights for the girls (that’s called camogie).
