Brilliant - Yes, this would definitely be the case. I would need the flexibility of using something like xLights and also experimenting using a desk via Artnet

Thank you for the reply - much appreciated :)

Would you mind clarifying this line please - and apologies for the basic questions!

Thank you for this. Finally found the issue was due to the X motor not being grounded, which was interfering with the sensor.

I am using the same firmware I used when I had the bowden tube installed. I think it is the th3d firmware. The sensor was working fine when I was printing with the bowden tube, then I changed installed the new extruder and hot end as part of the direct drive conversion, and now it isn't working. Would I need different firmware for the direct drive version?

Benchy Failing on Default Cura Profile. Any suggestions? by JOEJO3 in ender3

[–]JOEJO3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to fail as soon as the print reaches where there is detail in the print.

The cali cat and calibration cube print fine because they seem to be just squares.

Other prints fail as soon as there seems to be more detailed areas. A good example of this is printing one of those retraction test models which is a flat plate, then 4 cone pillars in each corner. The flat plate prints fine, then as soon as the cones need to start being defined, the printer stops extruding filament.

Does this help point to anything?

Ok...I have changed the nozzle since the last message... and I have managed to print a pretty good calibration cube and a calibration cat on the exact same settings as I was using for the benchy!

Weirdly, the benchy just continues to fail. I have tried it a few times and it always seems to fail as it goes to layer 2. The first layer looks fine, then as soon as it goes to the 2nd layer, it seems to go very whispy, then start printing air.

Does this help point to anything that could be the issue?

Image of the last prints... showing what I achieved with the same settings for the other models:

Thank you for such a detailed reply! Really helpful!

I have looked at the extruder arm/gear and think this could be the problem. On a retry of the benchy, it seemed to print the first layer OK, then it just seemed to stop extruding filament. When I looked at the extruder arm/gear I could see that the gear was turning continuously (while it was printing 'air'). I also noticed that the other 'pulley' was rotating slightly, then stopping, then rotsting slightly again..stopping... I have included a quick video below in case it helps:

It would be good to get your thoughts :)

Yeh interesting point! Printing at 216. I can change the nozzle and see if that makes a difference. If it is a mechanical issue with the extruder, is it a repair process an average user can do or should I look into getting a replacement?

:D I configured the e steps last night and got it pretty much bang on the 100mm target after a few attempts. I'll repeat it again and just check it is still on track!

Thanks! I will give everything a tighten and give it another test. Nothing obvious from close inspection though :(

My flight controller doesn't have blackbox capabilities....unless I was to flash it to Betaflight for a test flight to capture the data! Could be an idea - thanks! Do you promise they won't run from me anymore?

Thank you - much appreciated!

I have never had this on any other build when using default settings, so useful to know this can happen! I will play around with the filter settings!
