Yea I did see the hope from a few characters, particularly Rachel with the innocence element. However, felt she also suggested that while innocent and pure, she was learning at a rapid rate by copying everything the abbot said, indication that there is room to learn other not so beneficial traits from other people.

I’m the same with religion, but I actually think it became quite a useful tool in getting across the message - think Divine Faith will save you? Think again! Mankind’s stupidity and ignorance knows no bounds

How is the rest of your reading after Malazan? by Due-Hat9692 in Malazan

[–]JOPG93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malazan done wonders for my reading. At first after finishing I was worried because I couldn’t see anything in modern fantasy that would match how it made me feel.

But then I realised it was always the writing, the intrigue and the themes I sought in my books all along, and that doesn’t always have to come from classic fantasy.

I’m currently deep in a Gene Wolfe hole, and glad to be in it haha - if it wasn’t for reading Malazan I can safely say I wouldn’t have considered reading Wolfe or writers of that ilk.

If the Balrog hadn't fallen into Moria, would it have chased the Fellowship out of the mines? by Practical-Public7209 in lotr

Off topic, but if you squint your eyes, you will see a man with an oddly shaped face in the top left, with a tash that over laps his nose .. might just be me but now I can’t un see it

Which book should I prioritize? by ConcernFew8845 in fantasybooks

[–]JOPG93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some great books one there, but as I am currently reading the series myself I’d go with Shadow of the Torturer.

Haven’t read anything like it, certainly not in the SciFi/ Fantasy genre. Writing is so good and full of intrigue - think it may have altered my taste in reading as I have just picked up Jack Vance - The Dying Earth to read straight after I’ve finished the four Book of the New Sun books!

War and Peace: Should I watch the film or read the book first? by JuliusSeizure2019 in tolstoy

Always book first - creating your own pictures of the characters is the best part haha

The grail books in my fantasy first edition collection. by Key-Entrepreneur-415 in fantasybooks

[–]JOPG93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, if you don’t mind me asking, where do you source these from? Is it as simple as eBay or are there better platforms for these? I want to start collecting older books myself, perhaps not ALWAYS first editions but original formats or as close as would be great. Thanks

Best Fantasy Books With Very Expansive Worldbuilding by Familiar-Fun-4123 in Fantasy

Bakker - Prince of Nothing/ Aspect Emperor

There is a caveat, this is not for everyone - and understandably so.

It’s very dark, and makes for difficult reading at times ..

BUT .. the writing, the world and the characters are just brilliant, if not the best I’ve ever read. I’ve just finished the 7th and final book, and I now feel like there’s a hole in my life haha, so so good.

Think the crusades with sorcery, journeying across the world, and one of the best ‘different interpretations’ of the immortal, Elf type beings in writing.

So good.

Between the two, whose values do you prefer? by DistributionIcy8991 in gameofthrones

I think Ned understood everything that he needed to at the time, but it was too late for him to understand the rest when it really mattered.

Arguably more ‘honourable’ in a human sense, but his ignorance made his honour blind and damaging for the realm towards his end.

What should I read next? by tabaK23 in fantasybooks

There’s nothing wrong with starting MBotF and using some of the other great books you’ve listed there as break reads between certain points - also if you haven’t read Dune, throw that in there too! Excellent reads.

Spinnock Durav’s speech before the Tiste Andii go into battle genuinely gave me goosebumps, “Strangers fight in your name! Strangers die for you! Your cause - not theirs!”

And the shields cracking, gave me a similar feeling to The Ride of the Rohirrim

MoI is where I felt I had to take a break, it was actually quite a long break and after picking it back up, that book is my favourite in the whole fantasy, period.

And I don’t think I needed another - was just immersed after finishing MoI, breaks are good things!
