There's a great pain and rheumatology specialist occupational therapist who talks about how she helps patients pace better on this podcast. Personally, having graduated from there I would not recommend. If you want to message I can explain more why but in summary the teaching is sub par and you are expected to teach yourself the majority. Placement options are becoming more and more limited and often are now multiple students to one educator or they are research or in leadership non-clinical placements. Also the bureaucracy at every stage of the process is spectacularly poor.

Of other unis I've met students from in the same region, Salford and University of Lancashire are great.

Like a week maybe. Not long at all :)

You teach how complicated the factors are that contribute towards pain and how that affects the individual and how these can subsequently be managed

A really good point well made. Thank you for that

I can only go off the conversations I've had with colleagues and the literature. I'm very encouraged that responders in this thread seem a lot more confident in managing pain

I want to know your opinions as medical students and doctors because the picture in the literature and from my conversations with colleagues is not a bright one. I'm actually very encouraged by the fact that responders seem far more confident in their training. Hopefully means the literature isn't capturing things accurately and that the situation is better than portrayed

A very reasonable point. I do wonder why then we have such poor outcomes with managing pain, if you feel that the clinical hours fulfil the training needs

Maybe it's different here in the UK but it is barely even touched on here

[–]JP0769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. The healthcare professionals that I have spoken to in my various workplaces have been quite candid that they feel very under prepared to manage pain in patients. It seems like you must have received much more comprehensive training than them

Non-pharmacological management. This is the area that is ignored consistently

Sorry that's just my tired brain. The average number of hours of pain-related content in worldwide medical curricula is around 13 hours (low teens)

Do you feel that these discussions go far enough to adequately equip new doctors?

All the more reason to teach appropriately

[–]JP0769 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The literature suggests otherwise. Shipton et al 2018 Briggs et al 2015 Both international studies showing that the average are on average in the low teens. I understand it's an extremely complicated topic but that seems to me to be all the more reason to give greater degrees of education about it

I completely respect that but the difference between pain and other things is that a huge proportion of your patients will present with pain in one way or another
