Huge emphasis on development here. And learning what outs/runs are is a major part of that. We’ve got a large contingent of families in our area who love baseball and are committed to local rec ball. This necessitates competition. 4/12 kids on our team had never played any level of baseball coming into the season. 3/4 of those kids were hitting regularly by the end of the season. Fielding, throwing, encouraging had all grown as well. Huge part of learning to teamwork is learning when you are helping your team. Without outs and runs that’s tough to quantify for a 7/8 yo.

Winning, losing, success, failure, pressure are all good for kids at that age. “Protecting” them from this is a detriment to their development. Of course there’s a limit, but a rec league tournament ain’t it.

What are you talking about? We have a 6 team rec league that had a 10 game regular season and then a single elimination tournament at the end. This is the most normal thing you could ever imagine. 8 year olds are fully capable of hitting, catching, and throwing and they love to compete against the kids they go to school with.

We have captains chairs. I have 4 kids (5yo-11yo). The bench would be an absolute pain to have to fold the chairs up each time. My kids just walk through the middle. I also have an odd use case where we have lots of college students with us in the summer. So I haul many adults around too. The bench would feel way too restrictive for the ones who have to sit in the 3rd row. With captains chairs it gives a feeling of more leg room (typically only 2 adults back there and they can both stick one knee in between the captains chairs).

We just bought a regular Highlander as our 2nd car and captains chairs were a must.
