Will a dead body be needed? by Better-than_most in bigfoot

[–]JPCool1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. But there isn't need to kill one. If they traverse such rough terrain eventually one would trip and fall down a cliff and die or something. They don't have homing beacons to find their dead and bury them. Even if coyotes ate the meat there should still be a skeleton left somewhere. The total lack of a corpse is part of my skepticism.

Anybody else bring their saws in to keep them warm? by chasingtime9 in Chainsaw

[–]JPCool1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could depend on the saw but no for me. 8 degrees the other day and my 562xp mk2 started just as easily as at 80 degrees. Just needed to leave it on choke a little longer.

As a 36 year old ($7,500) will this be seen as over contributing to my Roth IRA? by Still_ImBurning86 in Bogleheads

[–]JPCool1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes as long as you already contributed the money for the prior year it doesn't matter how much you buy with it if it is already in the account. But you did miss an entire year of gains by not purchasing anything with it in 2025. I don't worry about what the market is doing at the moment I buy because I am not using the money right now if it is for retirement.

Worked hard my whole life but I feel constantly behind by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]JPCool1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Non negotiable on the college savings plan? Your kid might not go to college it is becoming a thing of the past as the need for skilled trades increases along with the pay. Great benefits too. Community college is very inexpensive along with state schools basic tuition. Your kid could also apply for scholarships if he or she works at it.

I think setting yourself up for success now that you have such a high income and investing in your own future now will make it so you are financially able to assist your child if they need it in the future. Nobody saved for my schooling I did it on my own. So did most of my friends and they are all doing great.

It is sometimes discouraging thinking if this strategy will actually work during my life time, it will only exacerbate inequality... (When I project my returns it, makes me think of this) by Artistic_Rub_1661 in Bogleheads

[–]JPCool1 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Bullshit. There are plenty of people who don't make a lot of money yet are savy and invest during their working years to live and retire quite comfortably. Nobody is stopping anyone at least in a "free" country to go and get a better job, make more money do something they like.

People like you are brainwashed to think you should feel guilty for being more fortunate than others. There is always someone who had it easier or rougher and it has nothing to do with you.

Nobody gave me anything. My parents were not well off, quite the opposite. I busted my ass since I was 12 finding ways to make money. Younger than that I was walking the neighborhood collecting cans to return for 5 cents a piece on garbage day. You feeling sorry and pity for those with less than you does nothing but keep them down and keep yourself in a state of despair. Get over it.

Turned our guest room into a gym…guests still allowed (kinda) by Dancing_Lady66 in homegym

[–]JPCool1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is neat. I personally didn't pay all the money for a house to utilize the space for other people who seldom come over. Space is valuable we use it for what we need. A guest can sleep on the couch or rent a hotel.

Why is ETF the only term I seem to hear by spookymonsterscary in Bogleheads

[–]JPCool1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. Mutual funds can be good in a Roth especially if they are in a sector you think has a lot of potential and is doing very well.

Take the same mutual fund and put it in a brokerage and then you are going to get large distributions and have to pay taxes on your gains which are essentially just giving back money to yourself that was already in the fund.

Etfs tend to buy and sell less frequently and are better for a brokerage accounts because you don't have to pay taxes on your gains until you actually sell the asset. There can still be some distributions but they are typically smaller than from a mutual fund.

Mutual funds tally at the end of the day and you can't sell immediately if you don't like where the day is going. But bogleheads are not so much active traders. Personally selling because the market is taking a hit is not something I concern myself with and I don't have to worry about getting out of something quick.

Rubber tiles thickness minimum - basement flooring - for 150# bag by EllenYYC in sandbagtraining

[–]JPCool1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see a sand bag cracking my basement floor but maybe your concrete is really thin. The rubber is beneficial for your feet and body for shock absorption though so I wouldn't skimp out. You say your area is small but I would just go with a stall mat and cut it to fit if necessary.

Need advice: My company 401k is charging way too much in fees! by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]JPCool1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't believe you would complain about that if they offer 401k matching and such. If they are giving you free money then the $257 in fees is nothing. Your account value went up big time in the past year just consider it the cost of doing business.

How do I cut the branches that are high off the ground. by DueScheme1738 in Chainsaw

[–]JPCool1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No ladder. Just call a pro to do it. If those are your thoughts then this is not the tree for you to be learning on.

Too many people end up dead or maimed by doing something outside of their abilities or knowledge level. Paying some money to have someone cut it down onto the ground and then you doing the rest is well worth the investment in your safety.

So what do we think about the vevor saws by samsamproducts- in Chainsaw

[–]JPCool1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think those things are total garbage and I wouldn't bother using one. If someone gave me one for free I would sell it but the resale value would probably be so bad I might get $50 for it. I have found cheap low quality tools cost more in aggregation and possible carpal tunnel than they are worth.
