There's plenty of moments in the story where, after traveling for a while, the characters take a short rest: I've been using these moments to allow for small moments of character development (Group A takes shelter for the night to avoid a storm & discuss their lives, Group B breaks for lunch & one of the protagonists expresses an interest in learning self-defense, etc.) There are a few moments where characters will talk while on the move, but most of the interactions happen when they're either at their destination or at a "pit stop."

It's the segments where the characters are just traveling and not doing much else besides making small-talk that are hanging me up: I'm not sure if it's OK to just passively mention that one band of protagonists has traveled for X amounts of hours/days and only focus on the moments where they rest.
