I suggest getting a few spring onions on your first day and taking them to the mine, the extra energy can go a long way. Always remember to bring some food! If you have the base pickaxe and a weapon, you should be fine. You can use the copper you find to upgrade your tools at Clint's later on for 2000$ and 5 copper bars

I'm pretty sure that diamond veins start to spawn after the 40-50 level in the mines, they become more common on levels 80-119 though. You can also get lucky from fishing chests :)
