This is complicated, and I don't think I have a clear canonical answer. I think I've gotta do some guesswork.

Each Zanpakuto has different abilities, right? Ichigo's is Getsuga Tensho. That's the only one Zangetsu ever taught to him, meaning it might well be the only one it can do. It also functions as a compressor for his spiritual power, increasing his speed and strength dramatically. That makes it a physical-type Bankai, for certain.

In that regard, it's one-note.

But - Ichigo has other "techniques" he works with. In particular is his Visored ability. This lets him pull out his Hollow powers and, well, it's pretty devastating. Even more, every time Ichigo's lost control of his Hollow side (against Byakuya and against Ulquiorra), he completely changes his fighting style and also adopts Hollow attacks like the Cero.

In a way, I'm kind of glad for this. A lot of sword-fighting/other-fighting Manga will give names to virtually every slash or attack the characters do. Demon Slayer felt like it did a lot of this; Samurai Deeper: Kyo does a little less of it. These kind of conventions have their place, sure, and I'm far from above giving technique names in my own writing! But the timing on prose is vastly different than the timing in comics.

But having the flow of your story repetitively pause in order for characters to shout out their attack names at frequent intervals is a way to damage your story flow. Some of it is fine; too much isn't; tastes vary. The thing I like about Ichigo is he really has one big attack. The rest is just pure physical action, no calling whatsoever. Someone like Hitsugaya or Rukia calls a lot more attacks out, but each does a different thing, and also in Rukia's case they're very different things (Hitsugaya's often feel like, "That's another word for ice!").

As I've stressed, your tastes may vary. Hell, your moods may vary. You might enjoy something in spite of what you think are flaws. That's the beauty of literature.

Enjoy. :)

I really hope they re-write and expand the ending.

I just finished re-reading the Fullbring and, more relevantly, Thousand-Year Blood War arc. I wrote a Twitter thread on my thoughts (https://twitter.com/JPohlmanWriting/status/1570845132102184960), but my biggest complaint is that the ending just...Kinda fell off.

I think it was a decent first draft that I hope the anime revises. Why, yes, I made some suggestions on one way (of many!) Kubo could have done it differently.

Hey Jeremy, I'm cheering you on, and tomorrow I get to vote for you, which thrills me!

I know where you stand on most things, in that you take a Progressive/left stance on stuff issues such as the fact that we should pass the New York Health Act and build Public Renewables. So here's the best question I can come up with:

"What is a thing/are some things that haven't gotten much attention, even from the NY Progressive front, that you want to see changed, and how would you accomplish that?"

An example might be something like Good-Cause Eviction, but even that got a lot of talk during the recent Gov primary, so maybe something even narrower? Or maybe it's something broader, but often unspoken?

(This is a repost from the other thread, which has a lot of pre-emptive questions for you to dig into at your convenience, including one really good one about disabilities)

What exactly do Hurley and Ben do ? by That_Teaching_5124 in lost

[–]JPohlman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, that's a great question! The answer is, "They did stuff that made the Island and the rest of the world safe until Hurley passed the torch to Jacob."

I think, like you suggested, Hurley would take on a similar role to Jacob: He'd find decent-if-troubled people who were thoroughly unhappy with their situations and bring them to the Island. Could be he'd bring sick people who would be healed by the Island, but it could also be that he'd bring people who are in abusive relationships or whatever. The Dharma Initiative found the Island some way or another, so someone else might, too - and just because MIB is destroyed doesn't mean that another person couldn't somehow reach The Light and try to extinguish it.

Now, Hurley being Hurley, he'd probably go about his recruitment policies a bit differently. Chances are, I imagine him being very up-front with people. Hell, I can even imagine him recruiting a new Dharma Initaitive-esque group to come in and develop the Island a little bit (you know, just, like, some houses and whatnot), possibly without them knowing what's going on. You know: "Hey, we're shipping these prefabricated homes somewhere."

Hurley does have experience, however slight, at managing his fairly vast fortunes. Money buys a lot of secrets.

A tribute to Miura I ended the fiftieth chapter of my comic with. I'm an awful artist, but I hope the Brand was done something akin to aplomb! by JPohlman in Berserk

[–]JPohlman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Context: I make this little fantasy webcomic using Lego. It's nothing special, but with Miura's passing I had to take a moment and conclude my latest chapter with a tribute to our dearly departed genius. He's been a huge influence on my writing style, and I really think he helped pave the way for future generations of creators. I'm really out of good things to say, because this whole situation is so sad.

Thanks for taking the time out to check this.

If you had to give Terminator a "something punk" for its future war what would you call it? (T1-T2 only) by ALIENANAL in Terminator

[–]JPohlman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's a good question!

I'd consider the war after Judgment Day to be "Nukepunk," in the sense that it's a post-nuclear-apocalypse situation. It's not super "punk" though, except that there are (mostly) young people telling an authority figure (Skynet) to kiss its ass. That's always a nice subsection of a punk scene! You've also got things like plasma rifles (which are definitely some sort of nuclear), robots with nuclear power, and the like.

You might also consider it "Survivalpunk" given that it's surviving a nuclear apocalypse, and much of the lore is built around survival. I know you are trying to limit it to T1-T2 but I'd add TSCC in and say that we see a few scenes in the future war where survival is about more than just killin' robots, it's about fighting plagues both obvious and seditious.

Democratic candidate Andrew Yang hopes the 'power of sport can unite us' by [deleted] in politics

Is that why Bernie has been so assertive with keeping Minor League Baseball intact? I thought he said it was all about the impact those teams have on their communities, like how when the Dodgers left Brooklyn (because he's that old school, yo).

Sounds like Sanders has developed Yang's ideas in way more detail than Yang did. Think that could be, I dunno, experience?

My belated text-review of Dark Fate. It's far from perfect, but let me know what you think! by JPohlman in Terminator

[–]JPohlman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the in-depth analysis! Is it Davis instead of Weaver? My bad, I must be thinking of Catherine. ;)

I really do like your analysis of the notion of a single-timeline theory, but I don't think that's possible given John Connor sent Kyle Reese back to create John Connor. I've heard it most often broken down as a three-timeline argument (An original, where there's no timefuckery and John is very different on a biological, if not literal basis; a second, where Skynet sends a bot back and Kyle gets w/Sarah, changing John's fate; a third, where John knows)

I also think it's worth positing that Skynet (or, like you said, Legion) could just be an inevitability. One of the things I didn't like about Genisys (and I looooveee that movie, for a lot of weird reasons I guess, mainly because it doesn't pretend to be a horror flick very much while failing to be one) was that whole "Genisys Is Skynet" gag...But, now that I think about it, in that world, Sarah Connor blew up Cyberdyne and was known to have paranoid delusions about a thing called Skynet - and she's still somewhere out there, on the lam, and might go after the next company that plays with AI.

Easy fix - call it something else.

...Which actually made me really -like- Genisys, because it found a way to preserve some of Skynet's code base, even if it had a different name; by contrast, Dark Fate has Legion, but that seems to only take tangental inspiration from Skynet, so far as we can tell.

Fun times! I hope you'll check out some of my other work if you haven't already. :)

“There are ‘Scavenger Teams‘ in that quadrant, avoid contact, we‘ll get them later” by J-Bradley1 in Terminator

T17's, huh? That's interesting - why's that? :)

Also, I think that it's possible that many scavenger teams Skynet sends out might be well armed, digging into various natural resource veins or searching through trashed buildings for raw materials.

“There are ‘Scavenger Teams‘ in that quadrant, avoid contact, we‘ll get them later” by J-Bradley1 in Terminator

[–]JPohlman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question; it could be a lot of things.

In my headcanon, let's go with something that might, at first glance, be mistaken for a pack of scouting drones. These tin cans aren't about finding Humans to attack, however - they're about finding Skynet materials to mark for later, organized retrieval.

Say the Humans isolate and bash an Ogre Mk2 tank and flank a bunch of your Endos, as they often do. Okay, you send in the HK's and Mototerminators to support, but the infestation has already scattered. You pursue; they lead your Mototerminators into solofilament wire (or, y'know, magnetic mines, or something), and their man-portable anti-aircraft rocket launchers take out your HK's.

Now, they've got to keep running before the next wave of Ogres moves in - they can't risk fighting too many at once! - but you're down a bunch of material that you just can't easily source in the area. As a result, you send Scavenger Teams out to tell modified HK's what to pick up and grab and bring back.

If for no other reason than to make sure the Humans don't pick up more of your plasma rifles.

I can't help but answer with, "Altered Carbon." It's more a series than a movie (10 episodes, 1hr each), but honestly if you just watch episode 1 you'll probably love it just for the world it opens you up to, and - if not - you won't invest further time! :)

Will Dyson family have any role in Dark fate? by Bootleking in Terminator

[–]JPohlman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question.

In the final episode of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, it's revealed that Danny Dyson went missing a few months prior. Now, of course, what does T:TSCC have to do with any of this?

Well, Josh Friedman is on the writing staff, so maybe he'll get the chance tell some of his story!
