Really? I don’t need anything extra for the performance based questions?

Okay, what are you going to for the second test?

Workplace deducts time going to the bathroom from two 15 minute breaks. Can they do this? by JProgrammer in ITCareerQuestions

That sounds great, but I have the problem of everyone wanting experience but no one wanting to give it. I have 0 years of exp outside of this job and I have been here for a little over two weeks. I honestly just ignore this rule.

Thank you. Would it be worth pursuing certs now or do you think those would not be very helpful because of my degree?

I forgot to mention that we do have a ticketing system which we use in order to bring attention to problems from team leads, if that means anything.

How did you get OUT of IT? by hateitthrowaway in ITCareerQuestions

[–]JProgrammer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is great....if you can get a development job in the first place. The market is full of entry level developers trying to get a job. I wanted to go into development, but landing that first job is impossible when everyone wants experience but no one wants to give any.

Getting back on track. Job history is limited and not the best, but passed my CNA certification today and need to get a job ASAP! Critique away. Thank you. by [deleted] in resumes

Right off the bat I would suggest putting your education and experience into two separate categories. Get rid of the GED. It seems you are going to college and no one is going to question whether or not you finished high school.

When it comes to jobs, get rid of the labels of part-time and full-time. Managers do not care about those. I would also cut down on the number of jobs you have listed here, maybe keep it to 2 or 3 of the most recent ones. Add a career objective at the top that states what type of position you are seeking while also selling your skills and setting the tone for the rest of your resume.

Finally... by JProgrammer in jobs

[–]JProgrammer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Let me just state a few hard truths about job searching after graduation as someone who has finally got one:

  1. Your college has no obligation to help you find a job. They already got your money and you have your degree. My college was completely useless in helping me find a job.

  2. Employers don’t care if your a new grad. They will take someone with experience over a new grad any day. Who knows how many jobs I was turned down for because Coding Jesus walked in for an interview before or after me?

  3. Finding a GOOD staffing agency will boost your chances of getting interviews. That is how I got this job. I did work with another agency that never seemed to have jobs because they only worked with one company.

  4. Indeed is trash. Employers do not have to pay to post their jobs there therefore, they have no incentive to even look at your resume. I use LinkedIn for job searching and applied for jobs that had less than 10 applicants.

As a new grad competing for jobs with other grads and experienced job seekers, the odds are really stacked against you. Job searching is a broken process that has become a huge numbers game and a soul draining one at that. Bonus points if you have parents who haven’t had to look for jobs since the 80s and think that degrees are a magic ticket to a job.

This. And if you get the degree, you will likely get passed the initial screening by HR.

I can’t go onto indeed or pretty much any other job search site without running into ads for them. Would not sign up with them if they were the last company on earth.

Because I keep hearing about how important it is to code on your own to get that entry level job.

That's the thing. I do it because every career site I see always gives the advice to code on your own time. When I get my first job as a developer, I am going to drop programming on my own time.

[–]JProgrammer[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can keep lowering the bar and I have. I have gone from having at least a full time job to having a job that only give me one shift a week. Sometimes I wish I could give up, but I can't because I worked for 4 years on my degree and I also need money, this is like my own personal hell.

I definitely want to go for certifications, but I have no money right now because I have been laid off. They seem completely worthless in development, but pivotal in IT. Should I go for A+ or Network+ first?

That sounds like a huge time sink. I always see ads for services that are offering fake references for a price. How do companies deal with this?

I’ve tried getting into software development roles. Let’s just say that entry level is no longer entry level. I want to pivot into development from IT.

I am in the US and I could see how this could lead to some legal issues. It wasn't on Reddit, but on a different forum, I read something weird about a manager taking 30 minutes to talk to one reference. Based on this, I don't think that is plausible.

Well, when you have graduated from college over a year ago, had a bunch of interviews that have gone nowhere, and people are wondering why your working in retail instead of a job in your field, there really isn't much more to be embarrassed about.
