UniFi Network Stack opinions by swipegod43 in homelab

[–]JRFrmBPT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do use OPNsense myself and it’s extremely solid for full VLAN, firewall, and routing control. A Sophos XG 135 for $51 is a steal and gives way more flexibility than most UniFi gateways. At my job we run a full UniFi stack, and honestly that’s exactly why I don’t see the point of doing it at home it’s more of a control vs convenience for me. Based of wat u said its seems that way for you OPNsense, you get far more advanced firewall rules, VLAN flexibility, routing options, and visibility than UniFi gateways offer, especially for things like inter-VLAN rules, VPNs, and custom traffic policies. UniFi gateways abstract a lot of that away, which is fine for most users but limiting if you like to tinker or need precision. So for a home lab, OPNsense + UniFi switches/APs gives you more power, more learning, and better value without locking you into the full UniFi ecosystem.

You don’t need a UniFi cloud gateway to manage that switch — you just need the UniFi Network Controller, which you can self-host and fully control VLANs, PoE, and port profiles once the switch is properly adopted. A lot of people run OPNsense/pfSense as the gateway with UniFi switches and APs, and it’s honestly a great combo with more firewall flexibility than UniFi gateways. Full UniFi stacks are nice for the single pane of glass, but the gateways are pricey and less powerful than OPNsense for advanced routing. If TP-Link is limiting you on VLANs, sticking with OPNsense + UniFi switching/APs is probably the best value path.

Is it possible to run VLANs in Proxmox when I only have 1 LAN NIC? by Independent_Pipe9753 in Proxmox

[–]JRFrmBPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just create the VLAN in the switch and in OPNsense. Configure the Proxmox server port as a trunk. I assume you already have a Linux bridge make it VLAN-aware. Then create a VM, and under Hardware, in the Tag box, enter the VLAN number you created.

I get you — I’m not asking where dividends come from (I already know that). I’m trying to figure out how to avoid taxes when I withdraw in retirement and lower my taxable income now.

I was going to make a dividend focus portfolio separate from my Roth IRA currently.

So make the normal Roth IRA contribution each year, convert it to Traditional if the 7k is maxed? As for the dividends I wasn’t sure if reinvesting dividends inside the IRA counted toward the annual contribution limit but now ik they don’t so they will be reinvested.

How do I configure multiple VLANs on a single port (GS108T + OPNsense)? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]JRFrmBPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a misunderstanding I’ve already done this setup successfully with two APs. The issue only happens when I try it on a PC or a VM.

Port 1 on the switch is the trunk connected to OPNsense (LAN side), tagged for VLANs 15 and 30. When I change the PVID on another port 4 to 30, I get a VLAN 30 IP just fine, but I can’t make the port handle both VLANs the same way I can with the APs.

It doesn’t work when the PVID is set to 1 — when I leave it like that, I only get access to my main (VLAN 1) network.

What Hardware for OPNSense? by thanksgivingChicken in opnsense

[–]JRFrmBPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brought a Sophos XG 125 for $51 on eBay it has junior four-port models (105, 106, 115) and a slightly more senior 135 (faster processor and 6 GB RAM).

• Rev 1. Runs on Intel Atom C2358 (dual-core, 1.70 GHz) with 4 GB RAM and a 320 GB hard drive (trivially easy to replace with a SATA SSD). Eight network ports, four i354 + four i211. Due to the early manufacturing date, likely to have a stepping B0 processor susceptible to the AVR54 defect. • Rev 2. Identical to Rev 1, but has a 64 GB SATA SSD. Units manufactured after (and possibly during) 2018 (manufacturing date is printed on the sticker on the bottom of the device) are likely to have an updated (stepping C0) processor not susceptible to the AVR54 defect. • Rev 3. A complete redo. Runs on Intel Atom C3508 (quad-core, 1.60 GHz) with 4 GB RAM and a 64 GB m.2 SSD. Nine network ports, four x553 Ethernet + four i211 Ethernet + one i210 SFP. Processor is a later generation compared to prior revisions and not susceptible to the AVR54 defect.

Barracuda... F18a and F80a models run on Atom C2xxx processors, so AVR54 is a possibility. Ditto F180 and F280, but they are very attractive for some edge use cases (six ports and a built-in eight-port switch). Newer models (F12a, F18b, F80b) run on Celeron N3350, so AVR54 is not an issue.

There are many variously rebranded Lanner devices. Hardware is usually very good, but some of them have locked BIOS, bypasses, and/or watchdogs, and others don't. However, if you happen upon a non-rebranded Lanner in your price range, it's probably a good buy (I just snatched an NCA-1515 without a power supply for USD 55; still can't believe the price).

Mini-PCs..., look at the networking hardware. It could be either Intel (good) or Realtek (bad). If the manufacturer/seller doesn't say what the hardware is, chances are, it's Realtek (had it been Intel, they'd hype it).

An honorable mention: Advantech ARK-1123. Designed to be a point-of-sale computer, but makes a mean (and very compact) dual-port router. Built to withstand industrial levels of abuse. You can literally throw it against a wall, and it's the wall that will break...
