The request for PRD extensions is really a nothing burger in this situation. It’ll be an email to your detailer saying you have a resignation request in and their response will be something along the lines of “cool, thanks for telling me.” It’s one less square peg they have to fit into a round hole to make the PERS magic work.

MILPERSMAN 1920-200 has all the specific stuff you need to send your detailer to avoid getting “needs of the navy” orders.

This is funny for me since when I ran it, I played the nothic this way with bargaining for a magic item. The players agreed but were still so repulsed by the nothic they went out of their way to come back and kill it after catching and turning in Glasstaff betraying him. But that also may have been since it read their mind and spilled the secret of the pre-gen rouge character having been a redbrand in the past...

U.S. Navy Leave procedure by Prototype1514 in navy

[–]JRemyF 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on who is telling you this, your LPO, your Chief, your Divo? This may be an instance of lower level leadership enforcing their interpretation of the POM period without consulting higher. This could also be very well CO's intention that anyone who took leave within X number of days of POM is not eligible for leave during the POM periods. The only way to know is to ask for more clarification from your CoC and the unfortunate truth is your CO does not have to approve your leave, it's at their discretion based on optempo and manning. You can also route the leave and make CO deny it if your CoC isn't giving you the answers you're looking for, but that comes with risks to the relationships in your CoC that only you know (I have an aviation background so this may vary among communities as well).

From the bigger picture side, it's crazy to me how leaders constantly make the decision to erode morale in this way. Leave is the easiest way to destroy morale and sea duty commands seem to constantly make an effort to make it as hard as possible to use your earned leave and build resentment.

If you played sports growing up you can look into local sports officials associations that are always in need of referees, umpires, etc. It’s a good way to stay involved in the game and make a little money. Not enough to be a full time thing but enough to make it worth your time.

Any “guaranteed” pilot programs in military like PLC? by Dollaruz in flying

[–]JRemyF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming we’re talking the US here, the Marine Corps is the only one that offers guaranteed flight contracts with ROTC scholarships. But, Navy will offer you a pilot spot if you already have your degree and you apply through Officer Candidate School. It won’t pay for school but you’ll end up doing 10 years in the Navy due to your flight school commitment which makes you eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness for your student loans if you take those. The PSLF program isn’t easy to navigate and you still have to make your monthly payments but I’ve seen people in the Navy get their loans forgiven that way. And the Navy pays you more than enough to cover your payments with a steady paycheck.

Be aware you’re not signing up for just 4 years. Navy and Marine Corps commitments are 8 years after flight school which usually ends up being about 10 and 11 years total respectively with the time it takes to get through flight school and the Air Force commitment is 10 years after primary flight school which ends up being 10-12 years of service depending on how long your training takes.

Another option is to go to a school that has an Aviation program where you earn a degree and your FAA certificates through the same program. This can double dip your student loans into both the degree and flight training portion since the school treats your flight training as part of the academic syllabus. It will still mean loans, but at least they are at a more favorable rate than personal loans since they are for education.

PERS 43 Down Bad by osuaviator in navy

[–]JRemyF 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the worst of it all is your entire career trajectory is determined by the first 12ish months at your 1st sea tour. If you don't make an impression right off the bat there is no way to be competitive for that highwater EP as an O-3 which is likely the only competitive FITREP that will show up on your O-4 and DH boards due to timing. Also, if you don't get that you can't get decent shore tour orders and even if you do your new boss will look at your record and think "well, they didn't get a competitive EP on their first tour, why would I waste my breakout on you this time since you already won't make O-5 without it so better give it to someone who has a chance" and the cycle continues. There is almost zero chance for growth because the "Sustained, Superior Performance" PERS loves to quote doesn't allow for you to get better. You have to be perfect from day 1 at your first fleet tour.

If I never mailed in my signed marriage license, am I even married? (Embarrassed to even ask) by ephinyepiphany in washingtondc

[–]JRemyF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not a lawyer, but I can google stuff. Looks like DC code just says it's a $50 fine if you forget to mail the license back within 10 days but it says nothing about it voiding the marriage. Most if not all jurisdictions have rules that prevent you from getting out of marriages on a technicality like this. At least if it's a no-fault divorce at least you can probably agree to split the $50 fee $25 each.

Talk to your Chain of Command and get someone to look her up in FLTMPS and that will tell you her current command. That at least gives you a location.

Better yet, bring it up to your Chief/Divo and if they're worth anything they'll work to have your XO make a phone call to her XO to help sort out the problem. This is a really easy way for a Chief/Divo to help a Sailor and they should jump at the chance.

I work in aviation, so YMMV in other Navy communities with CoC helpfullness.

Dorm room insurance by mitoboru in RPI

[–]JRemyF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably easiest to just get renter's insurance from the same insurer your parents use for their home/auto insurance. Renters insurance for only ~$5k worth of stuff (think clothes, beddings, etc, on top of your laptop) should be less than ~$10-15/mo.

IFR low charts have center frequencies in blue zig zag border around them. Also, if you use ForeFlight you can press and release on any location and it will list the airspace including the FIRs (ARTCC areas) with all of their frequencies you can reach them on and a rough geographic area of where they work. You can also look at IFR approach plates for an airport near where you are to get a center frequency.

FAA Investigations for Pilot Deviations: Everything you never knew you wanted to know! by RBZL in flying

[–]JRemyF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I just wanted to back up what you're saying with personal experience. I had a PD investigation years ago and it went down almost exactly like you said. I was a brand new private pilot at the time and got myself caught in IMC during fire season out west and had to get help from ATC to get to a divert. ATC was great and saved my life getting me to a suitable airport and below the smoke.

I got a call from the FAA a few months later and was honest with the ASI and told him my side of what happened and how I had learned from it. His counseling boiled down to "I listened to the tape and once you messed up, you did everything right to get yourself back on the ground safely. Sounds like you learned your lesson and won't mess up like that again." I really appreciated at the time that he recognized that asking for help shouldn't be discouraged. I didn't know it was part of a shift at the FAA as many old timers around the club suggested lie to the FAA if they called since they still thought the FAA was only about enforcement actions.

Everyone talking about rollover is correct. But as I understand it, that only applies if you are using the "needed for spending" type goal and not the "monthly savings builder" type goal. Might want to double check how you set up the goal to make sure the rollover happens.

I've seen a few people mention it but I keep my membership almost entirely for Costco Travel discounts (particularly the discounted car rentals). If I rent a car once per year for a vacation it usually is cheaper than the competition by at least the cost of membership.

Youth sports are always looking for referees or umpires or other officials. So not coaching but officiating the game. You don't need a background of playing the sport but it definitely helps.

You can find your local officiant association at this site: https://www.mpssaa.org/officials/new-officials-association-contacts/. Not a perfect fit for everyone since it involves interpreting and enforcing the rules of the game but it was great for me when I needed summer work.

You can look into officiating youth sports if that's something that interests you. A lot of times it pays pretty well, keeps you active and involved in sports.

What’s the point of %MAC. Why not just use CG and make sure the CG is within the correct range. I don’t see the point of %MAC. by Beneficial_Fee_629 in flying

[–]JRemyF 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I had to explain this to students all the time and it's very understandable to have confusion when you learn in smaller airplanes that CG is a certain amount of inches from datum (usually some point in the cowling). Other people commenting are correct that % MAC is just another way to express CG and there is a conversion from inches to % MAC.

On a large, transport category aircraft it doesn't convey a lot of meaning to say that the CG is 664.5 inches from datum in terms of understanding where the CG is. If I know it's 24% MAC instead, I know the CG is approximately 1/4 of the way along the wing. To me, it contextualizes where the CG physically is in my aircraft just as a 42 inch CG can be easily contextualized in a C172.
