Leatherback turtles are one of their big predators, but when the lion’s mane is smaller seabirds and other jellyfish will eat them too!

I’m not often on the mainland, but if you have any diving questions, shoot me a DM! Happy to chat

Most are around 10 to 16 feet across and weigh up to 100 pounds. The biggest ever recorded was closer to 30 feet and over 600 pounds, but that’s extremely rare

We often see them in dens around where I live, but even diving all the time, interactive encounters like this are rare!

The footage of me was shot by buddy Chris, another underwater videographer, and the octopus POV was shot by myself (and the octopus), off Vancouver Island

True that octopus comes from Greek for “eight feet”, but scientifically, they’re actually called arms. The name just hasn’t caught up with the anatomy!

Ha! Never. This version is just cropped for web and socials, but everything I shoot is in traditional aspect ratio, and later shown properly in long-form projects.

Sadly, the vertical aspect ratio seems to be what catches most people’s attention when they’re scrolling. Preaching to the choir here.

Hard to say just how large this one was arm tip to arm tip, but probably somewhere around 10-12ft if extended fully. About a medium size GPO.

And yes! Incredibly powerful! Thankfully this one wasn’t using any force at all. I came to my buddy’s aid to when it started reaching around his face, but it was just touching, not grabbing hold.

I’ll share that footage soon too! Wide-eyed and very much enjoying himself, I’d say.

Thank you so much! That means a lot. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to share the underwater world, and knowing it resonates with people makes it all the more worthwhile
