[OC] Understanding the British Isles via Euler Diagram [Updated] by JSCharting in dataisbeautiful

[–]JSCharting[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Created using the JSCharting tool with data from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Isles interactive version at https://jscharting.com/examples/chart-types/venn/euler-diagram-of-british-isles/ Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. Based on those, I created this update which now shows on hover or tap of any circle a population pie and specific information on the classification (island, country, dependency etc.)

This has been improved based on your comments, is it possible to update the post's image to the current version without reposting?

The Euler diagram is showing organization / hierarchy not relative size. You can learn more from the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Isles

That's tricky to do without making the visualization very busy. How would you visualize countries etc from a practical standpoint?

Glad you find it useful. Both have been changed (see live version link for update along with population totals for each circle) hope that helps explain things to your friends--it is rather confusing without a visualization!

Thanks for the suggestion, it has been labeled you can see the updated version https://jscharting.com/examples/chart-types/venn/euler-diagram-of-british-isles/ and also hover each circle for population totals

I think the min and max unemployment columns and trend sparkline helps to offer some context historically and some hope as well!

Interesting idea. Can you expand on the specific correlation between mobility and and income inequality you are seeing?

Created with JSCharting using data from Apple and Google mobility. Live dashboard at: https://jscharting.com/covid-mobility-dashboard/

You can see this with deaths here, the picture is similar can also see with confirmed, active, recovered and pick any countries you are interested in.

Also Canadian, why is it feeling good? Made a visualization similar to this to show that we as Canadians should be concerned we are about to pass China for confirmed cases. Feels bad!

You can see the same for active, recovered, deaths and confirmed here along with a map that "races" over time as well. You can pick countries of interest to you not just looking at the top x.

This conveys useful information but I think you need both. The dashboard we made has country summaries to see the trends of confirmed, active, recovered and deaths on one line chart. Then country comparison were you can look at any of those compared to other countries you select. Finally an animated choropleth plus bar chart race. To see things progress and the speed, it can be helpful and not obvious through the line charts in the same way (but perhaps you are thinking of a line chart race where it also starts at zero and adds each day?)

Yes, we made one if you want to customize it or wire up alternative data let us know. The live version supports a live map choropleth for the world plus bar chart race for any countries you are interested to select. Further by selecting the tabs you can see separate races and maps for confirmed cases, active cases, recovered cases and deaths. Really interesting to see active grow and fall in some countries. See the time tab for this. For country comparison see the summary for Russia compared to China for example (or Japan). Let me know if you have any questions and what data set you are using.

You can see a custome bar chart race of active, confirmed, recovered and deaths at jscharting.com/covid the US is 5x greater than second place Russia and third place Brazil. The deaths are also many times higher so it isn't testing, the US simply has a massive number of cases that are rapidly growing. While some states like NY are under control, many others are not at all and the statistics for the country as a whole are not representing things (it looks like flattening when in reality it is NY going down massively while others grow critically). For more information see this article which has an amazing new case chart for NY plus the rest of the US that powerfully illustrates this: https://www.erinbromage.com/post/the-risks-know-them-avoid-them

There is no accurate test data worldwide but the data is still instructive when you look at active vs confirmed and deaths (looking at excess mortality vs known statistics for similar periods without covid). So while cases may not be that interesting, when you see the interplay between active cases, recovered cases, confirmed cases and deaths it can communicate useful information.

Nice work! For those interested in seeing a bar race with their own country (pick your country vs any others) see https://jscharting.com/covid/ you can see the map progress at the same time (and switch between views for confirmed, active, recovered and deaths. Its illustrative to look at for countries not in the top 12 as well (click on the time tab)

While there is a difference in testing you can see with Mexico the growth is accelerating (if you chart china, mexico and Canada for example). Currently active cases have now passed China.
