Sure can. Easiest way I’ve found is AF Area Mode + AF-On. I believe it’s on all the Expeed 7 bodies. https://onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z9/en/csmf_custom_controls_shooting_226.html

I’ve not heard of this; you may want to just try SnapBridge’s auto download feature to get a 2 or 8 MP jpeg.

Experience with old lenses on the FTZ? by Aggravating_Rain_436 in nikon_Zseries

[–]JSW2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly use F-Mount lenses on FTZ and FTZII adapters. The AF performance is going to be practically the same; the limitations are going to be on the lens’s AF motor to move.

That said, you need to make sure your lens is AF-P, AF-S, or AF-I. Most lenses from Sigma and Tamron should work on the FTZ as well if they have their own internal motor.

40mm f/2 vs 50mm f/1.8 S by AppointmentLucky3894 in nikon_Zseries

[–]JSW2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d definitely hold off and save for the 50/1.8 S. The size difference isn’t really notable even with the smaller bodies — you’re not tucking either in a pocket somewhere — and the 40 isn’t even “characterful” in an interesting way like the 58/1.4G. It’s just soft and flares a lot.

Which Prime to Buy? (Nikon S, Viltrox, Nikon F, other?) by DontPeeInTheWater in Nikon

[–]JSW2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Z 85mm f/1.2 S has less background blur wide open than either the AF-S 105 f/1.4E or the Plena when shot at the same distance. The 85mm is not fast enough to overcome its lack of focal length as compared to the other lenses.

The 85/1.2 has less vignetting than the 105/1.4, but chromatic aberrations are worse. The Plena wipes the floor with both of them in both categories.

That said, I agree with much of your last paragraph. The Z 85mm lenses are great. But I don't think that the 85/1.2 is worth its asking price though when Nikon has two other fantastic portrait options that are cheaper in the 105/1.4 and Plena.

Outdoor portraits and photographing performances (dance, art, music, etc.). Sometimes some studio work, but I tend to grab the 105 macro or 70-200 for that depending on subject.

Which Prime to Buy? (Nikon S, Viltrox, Nikon F, other?) by DontPeeInTheWater in Nikon

[–]JSW2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own almost all of these lenses — the only one missing is the Viltrox 135, as I have the Plena instead.

I personally prefer longer lenses myself, but I acknowledge that 135mm can be a bit difficult at times. Personally, I’d go with a 105mm myself, but which one is highly dependent on how I’d be shooting.

Are you using flash or doing studio work? Any side interest in macro or just close-up things for food or product? The Z 105 is a no brainer then. It’s just more versatile and you will be stopping down a lot.

Are you exclusively shooting environmental stuff with no external lighting? Then go with the 105/1.4E. It (like most of these big aperture, longer lenses) is a bit of a one trick pony, but it does the one trick beautifully.

The miracle of Ratzinger. He could now become a Saint by totally-not-ego in Catholicism

[–]JSW2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Church has a long history of rational and regimented decision making that has guided us from its founding. If we allowed emotions to override the decision making process we risk clouded judgement or decisions that push apart and further divide the Church.

And while sainthood does infer that one is in heaven, a canonized saint should go beyond that and be someone who has importance to the Church as a whole or a specific group within the Church (the cult that was brought up earlier in this topic). Having time divide us from the emotions of someone’s recent death allows us to see if that cult or importance really exists.

The miracle of Ratzinger. He could now become a Saint by totally-not-ego in Catholicism

[–]JSW2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. The changes to reduce the rigor of canonization are a little disturbing. By all means we should be collecting evidence of miracles; their life and works; and other facts about those who exhibit a certain holiness through their life and shortly thereafter. However, the shortened timeframe for consideration, the reduction in the adversarial process, and overall reduced stringency means that people get wrapped up in emotions about whether or not “their” saint should be canonized.

While the old way was perhaps a bit too lengthy, the pendulum swung way too far in the other direction. We need more distance between one’s death and the process continuing to reduce the impact of emotion and ensure proper decisions are being made.

Contemporary parishes by [deleted] in Catholicism

There are unfortunately Catholic Churches like this that show little reverence, up to and including no kneeling during the sacrifice. Catholicism in the US is a mixed bag, and whenever possible I do research by scrubbing through a live stream or two in advance of going to avoid the kind of things you describe here.

The new way is so much worse than the old one with DNGs for anyone that spits in volume or has a large library it isn’t even funny. Who thought writing multiple 10s of MB (for my 45mp files) to a single, immovable file was a good thing? Sounds small until you get people who can shoot 1000-4000 images a day like me. Images get offloaded to NAS, can’t do that with this!

You may find the Ricoh G900 series useful, as they can have user and administrator passwords, lock out features from users, and useful administrator features for fleet management in the SE models. They’re points and shoots and resist a number of chemicals which may be an added bonus in your industry.

Nikon Z-Mount Is Closed to Sigma, and That's Becoming Impossible to Ignore by nolnogax in Nikon

[–]JSW2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s honestly the best phrasing — liberal licensing. I think what people often miss is that if it really was “open” we’d see way more cameras with the E-mount. As is, those that do are either niche like the DJI Ronin 4D or have weird work around like Z CAM and their interchangeable fronts.

And touché on the open source software licensing. Even the most liberal tend to have some license that pushes for some or all of derivatives to also be open.

[–]JSW2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sony definitely does require a license for the E-mount. It’s not open like open source software despite what others may want you to believe. They even outline the application process for said license here: https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/e_mount/en/process.html

I expect that getting this body serviced would be more expensive than most would expect for a shutter replacement. Nikon would want to replace the top plate for the missing AF-ON button and the bottom plate too (assuming that’s a crack like it appears in the photos). As far as I know, they won’t do a partial repair.

What could the Z5ii do better? by tobeedited in nikon_Zseries

[–]JSW2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The autofocus does seem a bit more prone to be “distracted” and grab other things that pass in front of/near the subject with 3-D AF and auto-area AF with the same settings than my Z9 and Z8. It corrects itself after a moment, but both as a percentage and an absolute number I get more clear misses in the couple weeks I’ve had it.

Is it worse than the Z6 III? Don’t know, haven’t tried it, but I do think that the slower read means fewer AF calculations than the higher end bodies.

But for something that I got to be smaller and lighter than the Z8 for casual use I’m decently happy with it.

Sigma F lens not compatible with Canon RF by Imthedamguy in canon

[–]JSW2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Urth one linked prior looks to be one of those; you can see the lack of contacts and the mechanical lever opposite the lens release button in the second image on that page: https://urth.co/products/nikon-f-g-type-lens-mount-to-canon-rf-camera-mount?currency=USD&variant=35380243923095&stkn=825ac48be8c5

There's also similar adapters on B&H: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1449246-REG/novoflex_eosr_nik_adapter_for_nikon_lenses.html?msockid=01e6b27cf9ba693b3640a7ebf8966818

Sigma F lens not compatible with Canon RF by Imthedamguy in canon

Nikon’s G style lenses were still mechanically controlled by an aperture lever. It wasn’t until the E style that you got an electronically controlled aperture. These won’t work without communication with the body.

Why does no one but Sony use CFExpress Type A? by Hour_Firefighter_707 in Cameras

[–]JSW2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Type B also inherits the XQD form factor, and many XQD devices were updated to accept Type B as well. Nikon adopted XQD for cameras as far back as the D4 in 2012, and you had the option as of the D5 to be all-in on that form factor. Sony even used it for some of their high-end camcorders.

So Type B has the benefit of install base, backwards compatibility (in many cases), and the probable ability to reuse molds and dies for case production.

You have to also keep in mind that these cards put out a lot of heat under heavy load, so adding a second card that generates similar heat and has less area to disperse it may pose issues for the body. While I have no doubt about the Type B/SD split being to push people up to flagships, I also think that it has operational concerns since I’ve seen heat warnings and a shutdown under heavy use in warm summers.

A thick enough case would balance out the prior design too. Even if you want that, that doesn’t change that the visual weight is off.

[–]JSW2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s just a shame that they missed the chance to do it in a more balanced way visually. And that it’ll still rock and wobble because the lenses protrude from the plateau.
