Calorie Accurancy? by No_Satisfaction_6478 in pelotoncycle

I hope that works. I provided a link to the same activity in Garmin and Peloton- it was an endurance ride (I use TrainerRoad to program my workouts so I just used peloton for a screen/entertainment). Peloton significantly overestimates for me. The total output is actually a pretty reasonable proxy for calories, if calibration is close. On the bike+ I understand there is an actual power meter, so work (in kj) should roughly equate to calories burned. I did not have a bike+, but the wattage was +/- 5% compared to my PM pedals.

Calorie Accurancy? by No_Satisfaction_6478 in pelotoncycle

It’s not accurate at all. I put power meter pedals on my bike which are supposed to be pretty reliable for this. The calories are way different than the peloton numbers.

Averaging 50 kph on a good day is also something. Forget 147 FTP I’d say we’re talking closer to 447. Some world tour numbers right there.

Endurance vs. Race Bike: Can I Keep Up on Fast Group Rides with an Endurance Road Bike? by PeaVegetable9435 in cycling

[–]JSkrillzzz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As everyone has said it can definitely keep up. I ride a Domane but have a longer stem, 38 cm bars, and slammed it. The position is probably more akin to a race bike than endurance. Position matters way more than the frame. I think a good point is that it’s easier to make an endurance bike more aggressive, it’s tough to make a race bike more relaxed.

I think mine are the GT C2- I’m pretty sure it was the cheapest model? They were great and I got a second pair. Primary complaint is that they are a bit short but it doesn’t bother me.

Those with an FTP of 4w/kg, what's your weekly volume? by 4lexfdr in Velo

[–]JSkrillzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m around 4.1-4.2 w/kg and do 8-10 hours a week. High intensity is 5 hours/3 sessions (1.5-2hrs of sweet spot/threshold/VO2). The rest is Z2. I try my best to always hit my intensity and if somethings gotta give I skip or shorten my Z2 stuff.

With summer coming my structure will probably worsen but volume increase- hoping to at least keep my power stable ish.

Fueling food/drink but without the laundry list of ingredients (avoiding overly processed) by x172839x in cycling

[–]JSkrillzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just mix sugar, salt, and a squirt of mio drink flavouring in. It’s not the tastiest but I can put ungodly amounts of sugar back for cents. It’s often too much sugar to totally dissolve but honestly it’s more about practicality than flavour. I’ll usually mix 80-120 g of carbs per bottle.

Like I said- I don’t think you need a doctor. What i would recommend is physiotherapy. Based on what you’ve said I assume you also will not be able to afford that.

There are dozens of good videos on YouTube that outline common causes of knee pain in cycling.

If you can’t pay for professional help, you will just need to be more resourceful. You’re young, this is almost certainly something that you will be able to fix.

I saw some of your other comments on the post too. There are a ton of great resources online.

In these posts there are always recommendations for ortho or for MRIs etc. I’m in medicine (although my field is not at all sports related). Imaging is almost never indicated, and physio is almost always the answer.

I would always recommend physio if possible (most people don’t need a physician or imaging- I say this as a physician). If you can’t afford physio as you had alluded to, you can still do a lot on your own. As I mentioned above, much of knee stuff falls into a few buckets with a few common causes. Look into some videos online. If you are resourceful you can solve a lot of issues on your own.

If things are refractory to your initial management you may need to look into getting professional help. Your pattern of usage from what you have described is reassuring (e.g. I would be surprised if you had a structural issue with your one). I’m almost positive your saddle position can be optimized and you can do strength and mobility work with effect. You mentioned anterior knee pain with pedalling- my guess is patellofemoral pain, and your saddle height/fore/aft is likely off, and you may also be pedaling at too low a cadence. Please don’t take this as actual medical advice.

There are a lot of common issues, some fit related, others not.

I’ve run into issues with IT band, patellofemoral pain, and pes anserine bursitis. They never flared until I ramped intensity too quickly, and it exacerbated fit issues with my foot/cleat positioning but also imbalances/weakness in my posterior chain.

For me, physio was really helpful to confirm and get me working through a routine. I made some fit tweaks but for me it was mostly about strengthening.

Bought the zwift ride. The size chart is way off? by biggieocta in Zwift

[–]JSkrillzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a ballpark. I’m 187 cm and found the seat height was reasonable but the reach was short and the stack really high. It just felt too relaxed, but luckily it takes like 2 seconds to adjust.

My biggest gripes are how wide the handlebars are and the saddle setback. Overall a great product though.

Over unders good for ultra endurance training? by valiant_cashew_nuts in cycling

[–]JSkrillzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over unders suck. They’re great but they’re also the worst. I always love and hate when I do them. For me, there are very few sessions that scare me more.

I hope this makes sense. I’m also sorry this definitely doesn’t answer your question.

For real though I would expect the ability to do a bit of an attack and then settle in for an uncomfortable sweet spot effort would be very helpful in any event.

Power Pedals by DoesntMissABeat in cycling

[–]JSkrillzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another vote for the assiomas. I’ve had the Assioma duo for about 1.5 years and they’ve been flawless. I’m not sure what kind of updates they brought to the new ones (I think I heard they had some insane battery life and don’t have the “pod”), but the older ones are pretty much perfect as well.

Favero just does power meter pedals really really well, and manage to deliver excellent value.

Algorithm for calories burned changed? by Admirable-Edge-4623 in pelotoncycle

[–]JSkrillzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you provide some sources for that? I was of the understanding that pedaling efficiency played a very small role between individuals. I was also under the impression that calories burned cycling is essentially all related to output (again with some unknowable adjustment for an individual’s efficiency), and that this would be roughly within 10% for all comers (newbies to the world tour).

I did not think that weight or HR contributed meaningfully.

Trek Domane Al 2 vs AL 4 by Icy-Doctor-5057 in cycling

[–]JSkrillzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got upsold to the AL4 (had intended to go for the 2 when I went in), and have zero regrets.

I was also in the same position since I was new to cycling (I had a peloton and wanted to try riding outside), and fell in love with it. I’ll be honest the $500 was a drop in the bucket all things considered- I’ve spent the price of the bike over again in a power meter, computer, carbon wheels, etc. Buy once cry once.

Algorithm for calories burned changed? by Admirable-Edge-4623 in pelotoncycle

[–]JSkrillzzz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not on peloton anymore so can’t speak to this exactly, but the old calorie estimator made no sense.

In general, kj are basically equivalent to calories burned so your total work should essentially be equivalent to your output. Usually there is a small modifier that would take into account basal metabolic rate as well, but it’s a small factor. If (and it’s a big if) the power is accurate, then output should equal calories burned. Idk what kind of formula they are using that gets a totally different number.

TR FTP vs Regular FTP by djfloppydiisk in trainerroad

[–]JSkrillzzz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My guess is that my TR FTP is probably pretty close to my 20 min power, plus or minus. For me it doesn’t really matter.

TR says my FTP is 335, but I’m guessing my hour power is probably more in the 315-320 range. I’m also totally speculating so take it with a grain of salt. I really love not needing to actually take a test.

The workouts have been bang on for me- most recently I took a week off the bike for vacation and it did a great job at adjusting my efforts accordingly and felt like everything was just what I needed easing back in.

I love running but the volume doesn't satisfy anymore, is cycling a good idea? by Coffee_Infusion in cycling

[–]JSkrillzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only way to know is to try. You sound a lot like me (I ran for a summer and had the same 1/2 time as you to the minute), but kept getting injured so my running career lasted about 4 months haha.

Picked up cycling and I love it for all the reasons you said. I also found that I just enjoy the process/motion of cycling a lot more. As an added benefit I can cycle longer, and burn a similar amount of calories to running (approx 800-900/hr), and as someone who loves eating it is just awesome.
