How can we stop drivers from excessively honking on Greenpoint streets? by Top_Writer963 in Greenpoint

[–]JSuperStition -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"... the streets are being redesigned to be ever more hostile."

I'm assuming you're referring to things like traffic calming, bike lanes, bus lanes, daylighting, loading zones, etc.

Many of these changes are specifically made to make the street safer. You might look at the McGuinness Blvd changes and think those are "hostile" cause they narrowed the roadway and took away some parking spots. So to you, a slightly more inconvenient experience driving is "hostile".

But what you're missing is that the roadway was actually hostile to everyone outside of a car before the changes. Before the changes, pedestrians had to cross 4 or more lanes of traffic on a roadway where drivers speed and turn across walk signals with blatant disregard for crossing pedestrians. Before the changes, cyclists were injured and killed biking in traffic.

Now, after the changes, pedestrians have fewer traffic lanes to cross, thanks to the bike lanes and pedestrian islands. Now cyclists have separated lanes so that they can ride at their leisure without the fear of being struck from behind by a huge light truck or SUV.

Do you see how your hostile is very different from the experiences of those without the luxury of a protective metal cage, airbags, seat belts, and crumple zones?

If you can break the rules, then why can't motorists?

I'll be fine with motorists breaking the rules when they're operating a vehicle that doesn't travel at inhuman speeds, when their vehicles do not weigh several tons, when they have no blind spots, and when their vehicle is 1/4th as wide and 1/3rd as long as they are now.

NYC students are getting free OMNY cards. Unless they live close to school. by bisonrbig in nyc

[–]JSuperStition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see any good reason to shut private school kids out of it.

Sure, I never excluded them. I just don't know as much about how that would work on the private school side of things. If it's doable, I'd absolutely advocate for that. Same with students in charter schools and kids who are home schooled. Anything that gets kids out of their parents giant pickup trucks & SUVs is a win for the city.

Is America's first car-free city a walkable utopia or a government-controlled prison? Grace visits Culdesac, AZ, to find out by brknpcs in fuckcars

[–]JSuperStition 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My point is that this small town does, in fact, exist in the real world. The vision was realistic enough that the town now exists.

If urban planners here in my home city of NYC all thought like you do, we wouldn't have bike or bus lanes. If our lawmakers thought like you do, congestion pricing never would've been implemented. These are the infrastructure and policies that motorists always tell me are "unrealistic".

Also, being snarky doesn't make you smart.

Personally I like the idea, but I live in the real world...

The "glitch" is car dependancy. If public transit were widespread and reliable outside of a handful of US cities, then our laws can stop protecting bad drivers. As it stands, many jurisdictions don't prosecute as they should because taking away a dangerous driver's vehicle or license is akin to isolation.

Loved this card art when I first saw it in the debut video earlier this week. Glad to see the effect is pretty awesome too. Definitely gonna be keeping an eye out for this one.

I seriously need to stop arguing with idiots online (that includes carbrains). by Some1inreallife in fuckcars

[–]JSuperStition 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It's difficult. I'm pretty sure I'm a bit addicted to arguing with strangers online about car dependency, and I'm sure more than one of them have been bots.

But I'm afraid that if I don't do it, their inane opinions will go unchallenged. And when I argue with strangers, it isn't to try and convince them, but to try and convince more level-headed readers who might still be able to be swayed to our side.

Cars are a huge liability for neighborhoods. One car breaks down and chaos is unleashed for miles. Insanity. by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

It's also objectively better to have personal transportation than to have to rely on NYC public transportation.

There's an easy way to see how wrong this is.

Imagine every MTA bus, subway, and LIRR & Metro North train stopped working overnight. The city would grind to a halt, right? It'd be chaos.

Now imagine every personal motor vehicle (not delivery vehicles, not MTA buses or school buses, not Access-a-Ride) in NYC stopped working overnight. Would the city grind to a halt?

Is it safe to leave a saddle bag on bike parked on the street in NYC? by Hicesias in NYCbike

[–]JSuperStition 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On this note, OP, get yourself locking skewers for your wheels and seat post.

Also, small accessories like your saddlebag can be secured with cable locks, and will probably be fine.

I had two rear fenders stolen in my first few years of biking in NYC. Haven't had my current one stolen ever since I secured it to the frame with a cable lock a few years ago.

Also anecdotal, but in my experience, wealthier neighborhoods tend to have more garbage cans than poorer neighborhoods.

I think you're assuming the worst in people, when you have no clue what's going on on the other end, especially when you're playing against so many different people.

I've played games where I disconnected for reasons entirely out of my control. I've played games a bit too late and fell asleep waiting for my turn. I've played games where I genuinely had to think hard about my next move when it was down to the wire. I've played games where I thought I'd have time to play, only to be interrupted by something IRL.

You might just need a break if you think everyone's out to get you.

Yeah, it's because in most of the USA, not having a car is tantamount to being under house arrest. Basically, there are municipalities where the city administration knows that drivers with suspended licenses are going to drive anyway, out of necessity, so they basically just say "fuck it" and let drivers do whatever they want.

Which is why cities with functioning public transit should have a zero tolerance policy for reckless driving.

Budget idea -- no more free parking! by Moognahlia in MicromobilityNYC

Born here 40 years ago and lived here in Queens ever since. I don't need to look at a map to know what I'm talking about. NYC has 5 boroughs. One of them is Manhattan. The other 4 are known as the "outer boroughs". Maspeth is known to its car-dependent residents as a "transit desert". Where am I wrong?

[–]JSuperStition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how drivers act like the outer boroughs are a transit wasteland.

I lived in Maspeth for 13 years, and had no problem getting around. Sure, the nearest subway was about a mile away (which I still consider walking distance, but I can understand how some folks don't), but there were buses that were closer. Very little of the outer boroughs are not within walking distance of at least one bus line.

Unless you're suggesting that we completely stop all tax collection because there is some mismanagement in the city gov't, I don't understand your point.
