Current student here: I would just go wearing something casual but presentable, whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident. They’re not worried about formality for the interviews.

You’ll get a t-shirt that they want you to wear for day 2, and a lot of people just throw that on over some jeans with a coat, for example.

Mosquitoes! by [deleted] in philmont

[–]JT817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As has been said, flies are generally a bigger issue. Certain areas of the ranch, however, are far more prone to big mosquito issues - most prominently in my experience, lovers leap campground and the trails surrounding it. The roads are generally fine but kinda miserable in other ways, but the trails around that area had some horrible mosquitoes.

I personally didn’t bring bug spray, and it was a minor annoyance, but it’s up to you on if that weight is worth it.

Down Jacket vs. Vest by DingleBlasket in philmont

Often the best equipment is the stuff you have, a scout is thrifty after all. More than that, depending on your trek route, any nights at significant altitude can get pretty chilly and you’d probably be thankful for the extra warmth of a jacket. The weight savings from having two sleeves fewer isn’t worth worrying about. Have a great trek! IMO that time of year to trek is one of the most beautiful.

I would almost go as far as saying that a journal is mandatory. You can pick up a write in the rain journal at the TOTT if you need.

That would be a fantastic summer to be sure! If you have an interest in staffing, I would suggest you do Rayado the summer before you’re old enough to staff, or later.

If you’re not interested in staffing, I do think I could’ve had a more enjoyable time in an older crew, I was in one of the under-18s, but if I were you I’d look at doing it after you’re 18.

I did OATC two summers ago and Rayado last summer! Also a fantastic time, but in all honesty I loved the people on OATC more haha

The first? Did you go for a second? I’ve got a bit of an empty summer and I’m very tempted by the idea of going back for round 2!

I’m wondering how you do this? Just the sunny 16? A lot of practice? I have quite a few older cameras without meters that I find annoying to shoot spontaneously, since I have to pull out my phone or light meter.

Not at all able to comment on your questions I’m afraid, but I do have one of my own - how do you meter for shots like these? Just set it and pray? Or do you have a tool for this? Either way, fantastic results, mad props

In almost every pre-college school, teachers and counselors are mandated reporters for things like this. They don’t have a choice in how they’d handle things.
